I have a post in Internet and Networking/ Internet Explorer/Outlook Express called Forum problems which is on Page 2. It has bween determined that the problem does not lie with the forum server or software because I can go to another computer (public library) and post and reply and edit with no problems at all.

Problem is, now, I don't know where to go to try to fix the problem. I have run sfc/scannow which closes its little window as soon as it is through running
thereby showing me no problems. I also ran chkdsk f and chkdsk r which was no help.

I have one person telling me that all I can do is re-install Win XP Pro.
If I do this what files will I most likely lose? I can burn my My Pictures folder to a CD and do the same with My Favorites folder. I do not see a method of doing that with My Documents folder which is most important to me. I can burn my windows address book to a CD.

I really do not want to go thru all this if I do not have to. Is there no program such as Win 98 had like System File Checker or Repair Internet Explorer in which no files are lost?

Your suggestions and instructions are really needed.

This is a tough one to track down, but it can be done.

I would use a utility like HTTPLook. I would install it on two machines. On one where the web site works, and on the one that does not work. I would capture the traffic on the two machines and do a comparison and contrast. I am certain that your will find the answer there. It will be helpful if you know HTML, or know someone who does.

There is no harm in reinstalling the OS, as long as you do not format your drive. You will need to run Windows Update after the reinstall. This approach to fixing the problem is a shotgun approach, and I do not recommend it for someone who wants to learn how the OS ticks. Try figuring out why it's not working first.

I appreciate your response "close_hauled" but that would hardly be practical. I doube very much that the public library 8 miles from my home would permit me to make that install and then there is the running back and forth to compare notes.

Again, thanks, but I am afraid I will have to continue looking for answers to my questions.

I had aproblem similar to this once.

There was a forum that I was using for weeks that suddenly would not let me log in from my home PC. I called the forum moderator and he said that I was being blocked because I was using a blind proxy server. I insisted that I wasn't, that he was wrong because I have a T1 circuit between my PC and the internet (No firewall, no switch, nothing on my end, just a direct shot). I brought my work laptop home and tried it and it worked, so why not my PC, I said. He said that my laptop had a different IP address than the PC and that it had not been detected yet by his server as being on a blind proxy. Sure enough, a couple of days later, my laptop could not get through. I called my ISP and complained. Sure enough, the router on the other end of my T1 circuit was misconfigured.

Thanks, Close_Hauled. The forum that I am having trouble with has been in existence for several years and what started ther trouble it's name was changed and it was switched to a different server. I argues that point with the forum admn. for some timwe and he kept insisting the problem was on m end. I went to the nearest public library, at his suggestion, and used one of their PV's, The forum worked just as it should, over and over and over, leaving me no choice but to grudingly agree with him. I ran aceross these possible fixes -Lspfix and Winsockfix, available at http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
I have applied them and seems to have helped although I still get logged out.

The odd part of this whole thing is that when I go to post and it logs me out, I can close the window, re-open it in another window and am still logged in.

I'm just looking for something to tell me what to do short of re-installing Win XP Pro. and an anwswer to questions I asked in my first post on this thread.
