hi all, i'm trying to host my own streaming media server but its turning out to be more of a challenge that i thought it would be. here is what i have done so far:
received a static ip address from my isp

isp installed motorola sbg940 gateway cable modem

i installed windows server 2003 enterprise on server(3ghz P4/1GB ddr ram)

when o/s booted i used the server management console to set the server as a streaming media server.

i then ripped my songs from cd at 96kbs wma format into a directory

i opened windows media service and started the publishing point wizard

when the wizard completed it told me that i could test the stream by clicking on a button there so i did and i could hear my music playing.

i opened the network connections and entered the ip information according to the directions provided by my isp

my problem is that no one can connect to my server. i don't think its online. when i call my isp technical support they say they can see my server but can't connect to it. i'm totally lost now. anybody have an idea what i'm doing wrong? tia

That Motorola Gateway is a router.
You have to forward the WAN side port to the LAN IP of your server (port forwarding)

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832017

System service name: WMServerApplication protocol Protocol Ports
    HTTP TCP 80
    MMS TCP 1755
    MMS UDP 1755
    MS Theater UDP 2460
    RTCP UDP 5005
    RTP UDP 5004
    RTSP TCP 554

thanks for the help i appreciate it. now if my feeble mind can grasp what you are trying to tell me! ok using the port forwarding application on the server i can forward the wan port from the router to my static ip on the server? i hope that is what you are saying. the reason being is because after much reading i suspected the port forwarding was the problem although i had no idea how to get it done. i tried logging into the gateway modem to see if i could somehow figure out how to forward the ports but i cannot log into it. i called isp and motorola tech support to find out how to log in. motorola said to call them later and my isp told me that the gateway i have is not configurable. so i hope i understand you correctly and can do the port forwarding using the application that you referred to. thanks again!

    Your user manual is here:
    http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/customer_docs/user.html

    Your logon is:
    admin

    password is:
    motorola

Looks like you have to enable the firewall then forward the nessessary ports for your applications to the local IP of your server.

Sorry it's not very easy and I cant explain very well. This task is not intended for the novice. That's probably why your ISP is playing dumb.

i'm not a complete noob, now that you have pointed me in the right direction if i can just log in to the gateway i think i can make it work. when i try to enter the ip address in my browser that is supposed to bring up the log in window, all i get is "page cannot be displayed ". in the manual they list the log in ip address as 192.168.10.1 or 192.168.100.1 i've tried both of those plus all the ones given me by my isp but no luck so far. i think i'll try motorola one more time maybe they can tell me of some secret backdoor or something :) . thanks again for the help. when i get it going i'll post back what finally worked.

From a cmd prompt on your desktop type ipconfig /all and tell me what the IP address is for your desktop.

i worked on the server over the weekend but still cant get it online. i called motorola and cableone tech support and found out that cableone tampered with the modem so i cant reconfigure it. they assured me that there was no firewall or port blocking or any sort going on. i dont think i believe that. from what i've read so far the server should be working now. is there some step that i've left out? i installed windows server 2003, used server setup manager to set the server up as a streaming media server, started wms pointed it at a directory of files, tested the stream. the stream tests ok on the server but no one from the outside can connect. frustrating!

Can the server 'see' devices on the internet? Ping them by IP? If so, ping them by name?
