Dial-up problem and Task manager doesn't start

I am runing this machine on a dial up connection. Every 10 or 15 minutes the connection will freeze and I can't close the connection. I open up the task manager and that won't come up either. The small icon comes up in my tray but the window doesn't appear. I've tried several ways of disconnecting but ultimatly I just have to shut my machine down via the power button because the shut down button through the start menu doesn't work either. I've run the latest versions of both ad-aware and Spybot S+D but niehter of them helped my situation. (I have noticed several programs that I delete and keep coming back: Mediapass, MediapassK, fpxvert, Wsup, WtoolsS, WtoolsA, pingpac)

You need to remove the spyware first.

You still have spyware on your system. It is preventing you from opening Task Manager. You may have some luck with Process Explorer from Sysinternals. It is a Task Manager replacement that works a lot better. Download it on a seperate machine if you can.

Also use HijackThis and post the log file here.

No one is on the spyware removal forum today, so you might want to post this at Wilders Security Forum. They have a adware, spyware & hijack cleaning forum that is outstanding. Refer to your thread here so that you don't have to repeat yourself. And don't post your log on Wilders. They have a policy against it.

    What program is this?

    C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\INSTAN~1.EXE

It is shown the old DOS 8.3 filename standard. Could you please go to the folder and get it's full name?

    Get this one too:

    C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\REGIST~1.EXE

    Most likely scanner software.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS mangakiwi :)

We'll be happy to help you out, but I have some errands to run right now and will post later this evening if someone else hasn't already. Hang in there!

BTW, this post will be moved to the Spyware Removal Forum since a HJT log was posted. ;)

    C:\Program Files\Textbridge Pro 8.0\bin\InstantAccess.exe

I think that is software that was bundled with my scanner. It takes scanned text and formats it into a word document.

You may want to print this out, or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode.

You are or were using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs...uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You may also want to run KazaaBegone to completely purge it from the system. Make sure to get the available LSPFix, just in case you are unable to access the internet afterward.

You have HijackThis in a temporary folder, and it has not been unzipped. Neither is a good thing. Create a new folder, in C: or your Documents or Desktop. Name it HJT, then either extract HijackThis from the zip file and put it in the folder or download HijackThis.exe from here and save it to that folder.

    Check for updates to Ad-aware.

Copy the text in the quote box at the end of this post to notepad, then save it to your desktop as RegFix.reg.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

Open C:\Program Files\Common files and delete the folder WinTools.
    Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the files ap9h4qmo.exe, pingppac.exe, dbmsrpcn.exe, ils.exe and fpxvert.exe if present.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content. Click the Security tab, then highlight Trusted Sites and click the Sites button. If *.skoobidoo.com and *.windupdates.com are still present, remove them. Close Internet Options. Then, still in the control panel, open the Java Plug-in, click the cache tab and then clear.

Open Ad-aware and run in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.

Double click the RegFix.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK.

Go to Start>All Programs>Windows Update. Accept all critical updates.
Reboot and go back to Windows Update until there are no more criticals offered.

Go to the Sun Java Website and update your JRE. Current is 1.4.2_07

Download RegSeeker and extract to it's own folder. Open RegSeeker. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Delete all.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

That Helped a lot! Unfortunately I'm still getting the wierd unresponsiveness from my internet connection. Whenever that happens programs tend to freeze a lot and I can't shut down without it getting stuck at the blue screen that says "Logging Out ".

Scan again and fix the following entries.

    C:\buddylinks.net Delete
    C:\Documents and Settings\me\trofkz.REG Delete
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ofdumqhn.exe Delete
C:\Downloads\Downloadmanager.exe Can you identify this? If not, delete.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IEService\v28.exe Can you identify this? If not, delete. What else is in the IEService folder?

Empty the recycle bin. Reboot and post a new log.

    Re-enable System Restore.

Try opening Windows Update from Start>All Programs and see if you're able to download all critical updates (choose the Express Install). Don't open any other IE windows, in hopes that your connection will stay alive with just WU running. It will take several trips to get fully updated.

Your log looks clean of nasties. Delete that IEService folder and empty the recycle bin. It appears you have stopped using AOL and are now using MichNet?? If so, fix this entry with HJT.

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

Then click the Config button, then Misc Tools button. Now click the Delete an NT Service button and type or paste in ATW and click OK. Click Back and see if the entry is gone in a new scan. If not, go back and type or paste in WANMiniportService, click OK.

    Reboot.

Still having problems with connectivity/freezing? Right click My Computer and select manage. Expand the event viewer and check each section for errors that coincide to the times/relate to the freezes. If necessary, go back immediately after an event and check again. You might also try setting up a new connection. If no help, remove the modem in Device Manager and reboot, allowing Windows to find and re-install it. You really need to apply the Windows Updates. ;)
