I am running Windows ME. A separate "Via Voice" toolbar appears in all my Word documents which cuts down window space. Is it possible to stop it doing so and simply select it when it is needed?

According to the rules it says questions cannot be entered under other headings but there is no guidance as to what to do if one mistakenly places their question under the wrong heading. I placed this question in "Other Internet Software" the other day by mistake but find I cannot amend the mistake. Sorry!

    Kind regards,
    Pat

Try a right click in a clear space on the bar at the top that has file, edit veiw, etc. and uncheck clipboard. There are registry places that can be modified too, so if this does or doesn't help, post back please.

Thankyou for the reply Sparrow. Clipboard was not checked in the first place so obviously I couldn't uncheck it! I should perhaps explain that I can uncheck 'Via Voice' toolbar and it disappears but when I open another file 'Via Voice' toolbar re-appears as though by default.

You mentioned the Registry, presumably because your next advice will involve me changing an entry which I am quite happy to do but would like to confirm with you first what method is used prior to entering the Registry in order to establish a Registry backup? I am using Windows Me.

    Kind regards
    Pat

I would use an image backup of the OS partition (e.g. Ghost); or use system restore; or just export a copy of the registry to My Documents (preference in that order).

From a search of the web, I found this, applicable to your question, but for Office 2K; you may have to modify the version number:

"The "AcbControl" value definitely works. Make certain you meet all of these requirements:

    1. It MUST be created in the appropriate key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\General

    2. It MUST be a DWORD value.

    3. It MIGHT be case sensitive, so make certain it is typed exactly AcbControl "

    AND if the above fails:

"Your office may be running as the local machine instead of as the local user. Try putting the AcbControl DWORD in this registry setting; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\General Notice this goes to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE not HKEY_LOCAL_USER "

Don't think it will hurt anything if you're careful, but of course, you're on your own. ;)

Another point I ran across: Someone said that if you open files as plain text the toolbar won't appear.

Thankyou Sparrow for all your help. I have managed to do as you suggested and after one false start the problem is now solved.
    Kind regards,
    Pat
