My Operating System is Windows 98SE and I would like to install RealPlayer 10. While reading the system requirements it is recommended QuickTime 6.4 or later be installed. Why? Thanks.

Took a peek at the System Requirements page ....

Best guess is that certain elements of Quicktime are needed for Real Player to function - may be codecs ?? Try it without!

I do believe you are correct. It appears RealPlayer does use certain QuickTime codec files. This brings up another point. Is there any significant difference between Windows Media Player 9.0 and Real Player 10? Thanks again.

That is a question that I cannot answer, never having used RealPlayer. However, it is my understanding that RealPlayer comes bundled with adware - one good reason to avoid it, IMO.

    jackpan,

There is some 'content' that is only offered for RealPlayer. There is an alternative player from jetAudio that plays 'Real' files, it's *free* and you can check it out HERE . jetAudio also offers a 'pro' version with more features ($29.00).

I don't believe you can just use the QT codecs with RealPlayer (or WMP). The alternative player you are asking about comes with those codecs. This is an older version of WMP (version6) that allows QT to run without having to install the whole QT program.
Sorry I missed the part about the jetAudio player need at least QT4 installed. IMO it's still a better alternative than using the very 'intrusive' RealPlayer.

Just to make sure I am reading you correctly, are you saying to download jetAudio and nothing else? If yes, do I keep WMP 9.0 installed after the download? Thanks again.

    jackpan,

I'm just offering you an alternative to RealPlayer. The player from jetAudio works well. It plays RealMedia files (RA, RAM, RM, RMM), Windows audio and video files, mp3s and a whole lot more. See HERE , but you would still have to have QuickTime (version 4 or higher) installed for it to play QT files. Quick Time and the jetAudio player are *free*, but it is YOUR decision.
You do not have to uninstall WMP. It shouldn't interfere and you can set the file associations in whichever media players you decide use and specify which program plays what.
    Hope this helps...
