Microphone Problems

Hi,
I'm running XP Home and am unable to get my mike setup to work.
I have gone into Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio/Sound recording/Volume.

The response to this is Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe use add/remove programs to install.

I have loaded my XP CD and also typed SndVol32.exe into the runbox but get no positive feedback, same results when I did when I did a Start/search.

The Microsoft websearch came up with Article ID : 266677 How to Troubleshoot Microphone Issues but it seems that is not related to XP.

?????????WHOOOOOO has the answer????

As an aside might I also mention that upon loading the XP CD I thought I would go to Check System Compatibility/Check System Automatically and got this...
"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. "
I take it that is a result of SP2 if so what complications would the above message carry.????

Follow those instructions to extract a copy of SndVol32.exe from the xp cd to your hard drive :

Thanks for the link it has at least loaded the sndvol32.exe onto the PC.

However, I still cannot record with the mike...and yes the mike is OK.

Sound OK but can't record with the mike.
