If I send someone an e-mail with the following "Regvsr32 jscript.dll" they get "Regvsr32 _jscript.dll" If I then sent what I just typed they get "Regvsr32 __jscript.dll" which is, I think two underscores in a row" This problem came to light when I was corresponding to Microsoft about a updating problem. I did not always get exactly what he sent me and visa versa.Does anyone know or have any idea what is happening and/or how it might be rectified. I use Yahoo. But I am not sure that they have anything to do with the problem. I hope that this is truly a new problem and also that I have posted it in the proper forum? Thanks loonychoons Lenny Chowns

Are those words in a sentence or a file attachment?

looks like they are trying to proactively foil some html or scripting shenanigans.

To Steve R Jones & others.

Yes these are File titles or name, please search "same windows update will not stop coming" , Posts # 9 & # 13.This may help to explain the problem? My support rep. from Microsoft sends me " Regsvr32 jscript.dll " but I receive through yahoo " Regsvr32 _jscript.dll " That is the problem the first file is in my computer but the second one is not valid therefore can not be found because it does not exist?? Maybe I am approaching this problem the wrong way? Does an underscore "_" preform or represent some other duty in the computer like a "+" sign or a "-" sign ? Maybe using an "_" asks the font or space or character to change? This one really has me stumped. P.S. I have also asked the Microsoft guy for an answer. There is no use trying to ask Yahoo they are harder to contact than Symantec (Norton) Thanks Lenny

Just an idle thought. Many years ago there was a script which did not allow spaces in URL's and file names and converted spaces to underscores. So "file 2.dll" became "file_2.dll ". I wonder if something similar is going on.

Cymru am byth!!! = Wales for ever!!

Jim. Yes I do believe you are on the right track, I think that you have hit the nail on the head? I will investigate further! I have requested some advice from Yahoo. After all if Microsoft wants me to enter a file title exactly then I should receive just what he sends me? I plan to try ,but I am sure that for the command to work ,that it will need the space? But I will try. Thanks Again Lenny. Cyfarchion & Dymuniadau gorau = Greetings & Best Wishes

    loonychoons--Diolch yn fawr.
I thought you would be interested to learn the results of a quick test I ran. I sent messages saying "Regvsr32 jscript.dll" from Yahoo email to two other (non-Yahoo) email accounts. No problem. Message received as sent.
However when I sent that message from a non-Yahoo account to Yahoo email, sure enough, it was received as "Regvsr32 _jscript.dll" .
So the problem seems to be in Yahoo's inbox.

You have to click on the Thumbnail below to see it in glorious animated form. The knight, of course, is an Englishman.

Is Yahoo playing games with me?

I contacted Yahoo? I am not sure, but first I do not think that they believe me (that they are adding "_" to some parts of my messages in their in box)? Or they are just playing games when they inform me that that do not understand my problem? Or they are just dragging their heels, hoping that I will just go away?, But the problem is there and it is bad. Person will not be able to trust that what they sent will arrive unchanged? My account at Hotmail works just fine unless it is sent to any person using an Yahoo account? Therefore if you send any program or file names, there could be problems!! Regvsr32 jscript.dll is changed to Regvsr32 _jscript .dll if sent to a person using Yahoo. Lenny Yahoo Problem # (KMM31419298V28466L0KM

i guess im having trouble grasping the problem here. I think its been established that this is an intentional modification, for your own protection, as part of some security system they have to foil malicious scripts from doing bad things when you read emails. Please see http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-008.mspx for an example.
For an attack to be successful, the user would need to visit a website under the attacker's control or receive an HTML e-mail from the attacker.

This isnt a bad thing. I understand it was a little confusing for you, but to be fair, you were corrisponding with an advanced tech and passing potentially dangerous commands around in email.

    Joe

Please see thread "Same Windows Update will not stop coming." It may help you understanding why I was concerned that Yahoo was adding an underscore to file Names and/or Program names that Microsoft was sending me? Kevin at Microsoft would send me (Regsvr32 jscript.dll) . but I would get (Regsvr32 _jscript.dll) if he sent it to my Yahoo address. If he sent it to my Hotmail address it would arrive just as he sent it. It took a while to figure out what was happening? Until he sent me the following statement.{ The correct file name is "Regsvr32 _jscript.dll" you see there is no underscore "_" before the j } So then I realized that Yahoo was adding the "_" after the space but before the j.With further tests by me and others proving that this was so. At that point I enquired if others had noticed Yahoo adding characters to their e-mails? Therefore the new thread.I hope this helps with the misunderstanding Lenny
