I have 98se, the pc card is a ethernet.

    You are probably looking for line like this inside your System.Ini file, located in the windows folder. This would be under the [386Enh] heading
    EMMExclude=A000-FFFF
    If you have the below line, that is from your nVidia video card. Note they are not the same.
    EMMExclude=C000-CFFF
    Go to Run\Start and type in Msconfig and press Enter, then click on the System.Ini tab to view and edit.

    The line that would control this in config.sys is like this one, there could be more there. You could delete this line and windows will not miss it, as it can generate Expanded Memory if needed.
    Device=C:\Windows\Emm386.Exe X=A000-FFFF

    It says <nil> is being exculded and the error message is :
    "Windows is not able to identify or use the inserted PC Card device because there is no memory area availble to communicate with the device. You must make a memory area available before this device can be used.

    Check your computer's CONFIG.SYS file for a memory manager that is excluding upper memory regions between A000 and FFFF. "

    And I have a Chips and Tech. graphics card. My config.sys contains:
    "device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
    Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 4000 RAM "

    Suggest you remove the "4000 RAM" from the last line (save the config.sys to config.bak first) and let us know if that helps.

    I agree with Sparrow on the Emm386 line.
    Edit your Config.Sys file to be like this. Note the extra line I added, it enables the Upper Memory area. Note there is no space between the comma and the U.

    device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
    Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
    DOS=HIGH,UMB

    Taking out the 4000 will not have any affect on anything that needs 4mb of Expanded, it will be provided if needed, as Emm386 is in Auto Mode by default.

    At this point suggest you try another nic (net interface card).
    Think it's either that or a reinstall of the OS (less likely but possible).

    Some links that may help. The links have little snippets or previews of points of interest. Click on the links to read the full details.:

    Bootup in safe-mode (F8) and look at device manager where "duplicate's" or "ghost'" installs may be shown and removed.

    RESOLUTION
    To work around this problem, reserve the region of memory that is already in use. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Device Manager tab, then double-click Computer.
    4. Click the Reserve Resources tab, click the Memory option button, then click the Add button.
    5. In the Start Value and End Value boxes, enter values for the start and end of the memory range you want to reserve.
    6. Click OK.
    Personal NOTE! I have not looked for problems that may occur if this is done, particularly if this reserved memory is needed by some other device. You may wish to further explore this method before experimenting and see if there are mine fields to watch out for and if so how to recover from them. Safemode and reversal would be my guess but it's only a guess.

    The above is a list of "pc card tshoot articles" from microsoft. Perhaps something in here will apply.

    What is the pc card and does it have a specific support site?

    Agree with Ann, and also note that a great many problems are solved by the folks who raise the question. Wonder if it's just hand holding, or if threats of drastic measures (buy new hardware or reinstall an os) get them thinking along the right line. :D

    Takes about an hour, but requires several more hours of installing the ancillary programs, so not usually something one looks foreward to.

    No 3rd party software to install? No customizing tweaks? Sounds pretty dull. :cool:

    It takes me about 2 to 3 hours to get my 98 system going, with 3rd parties and tweaks, along with cleaning out the remnants of things ripped out of it.
