Is there a way to use Server 2003 Active Directory/Group Policy to force XP systems in the network to run Disk Defragmenter say once a month? Currently all peopole using XP systems are "users" with no rights to Disk Defragmenter?

    Thanks

I was always under the assumption that XP handled it's own defragmentation and that routine defrags were not nessessary?

Cant you just schedule defrag to run once a month on each machine at a specified time?

Crack - security issues if you try to do the defrag via a local scheduled task. Since a normal 'user' account lacks rights to run a defrag (and I'd love to hear that explained by M$) the scheduled task would have to be done by a privileged account.

You can certainly make that happen via Runas and a privileged account name but not without either putting the account password in clear text or giving the user the password.

There may be some way to hide the password for a Runas but I've never been able to find one.

I schedule the defrags remotely on all my XP clients and 2003 Servers by typing:

    at \\computername 22:00 /every:M,T,W,Th,F,S,Su cmd.exe /c "defrag c: "

Nice tedkos. The At command running from a machine with a logged on domain admin account would certainly do the deed.

Not sure how it would do for a large domain but within reason, it certainly seems like a good approach.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

My company uses SMS to defrag the system. Whenever a user wants to defrag their hard drive, they use add/remove programs in the control panel, and select to install defrag. This doesn't actually install anything, but launch defrag on behalf of the user using local admin rights. Once the defrag is completed, the user just closes the program out.
