when i click start > shutdown, choose shut down and press okay from windows 98 se on packard bell, the computer goes through the steps to shut down (displays "Windows is shutting down your computer" "it is now save to shut off your comptuer ") but instead of powering off by itself like it used to, it just restarts after the "it is now save to shut off yrou computer" screen. i have to manually hold down the power button for 4 seconds while it is going through post to power it off. i checked the bios, no options regarding shut down, dont know if windows has anytihng to do with it.. what could my problem be? thank you in advance

Have you checked your Power Options? Control Panel, Power Options, Advanced tab.

    HTH. :)

Your rundll32.exe could have somehow gotten corrupted too. :(

If you have WinRar Zip program, you can view all cab files on your Win98 disk, as well as folders, and you can extract any file you wish from the disk with WinRar.

I've never tried replacing the two rundll.exe files in 98, one for re-start & one for shut down, but I wonder if it can be done safely?

Anybody know the answer to that?

Rod, the advanced tab in power managment options has only "show icon on taskbar" and "prompt for password when coming off standby ". i dont think either of these has to do with my problem. as for the rundll files, i will take the originals off the win98 disk and let you know if it helps or not

Geesh! Replacing the rundll32.exe's was my best "brilliant software idea." :D

So if it isn't in the exe's, & not in the power management & tweakui won't fix it, it just could possibly be in the electronic switching component in the computer & it's not obeying orders. Possibly the electronic switch isn't working properly. There's probably a separate electrical pathway for each switch in the hardware switching component, or two parts to the same component, each part controlling one or the other of the Shutdown & Restart. When you tell it to shutdown it goes through one side of the component, or pathway & when you tell it to restart it goes through the other side, or pathway. If that could possibly be it, then it starting to happen at this particular time is just coincidental. Stranger things have happened on these aggravating contraptions. :)

    Just a thought. :)

I had the same problem recently.

After messing with the O/S and bios for way to long. I switched the power supply with one that I knew worked.

With the different P/S the Computer shutdown fine. Out of curriosity I put the old P/S back in and again it shutdown without any problems.

My conclusion - reseating the power connector could have saved me a lot of hassle.

    If you've tried everything else......

Cas Man, if you had a newer system, I would have said that you hadn't found the "magic" bios setting. The last two systems I've built would not shut down from Win98SE unless a specific bios setting was enabled. For my K7S5A, it was "Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA" (which makes no sense in a modern board) and for my MSI 745 Ultra it was Power Mgt. (in bios).

But as you have a much older system I don't think any playing around in the bios is going to help. I don't know the history of your machine but would you consider a full-fledged OS rebuild (i.e. fresh install of Win98SE)? Over time, things get quite screwy in Windows and can benefit from a rebuild.

There's also a Win98 shutdown patch that worked for me in one Socket 7 system. I think Alex's middle link points to it.

Another thing to try (if you've got a BIOS like mine) look for a setting "PME wake on event" in your BIOS, I think it's either in the chipset features set up, or PnP set up.

If you find this setting, make sure that it is set to "DISABLED ", also, you'll have to "DISABLE" the setting "Resume on LAN" else scandisk will run every time you start the PC.

(If your computer is linked to a network of some kind, then you may want to find out exactly how this will affect the relationship between your PC and the LAN)

    Dig.

    oops, sorry

"PME wake on event" & "Resume on LAN" are actually found in "POWER MANAGEMENT" (Where else........?)
