running winxp pro when I switched users the duck by my name changed to the same as the second user (the chess thing picture) I went to user accounts in control panel and the only pictures I am offered are under my pictures which are from sample pictures. How do I find the pictures that came with xp pro?the duck, butterfly, chess game etc? Also I how do I get the netscape short cut and envelope on the taskbar for the second user? Thanks heaps

Please observe Posting Rules #3 - meaningful subject - I have edited your title.

Suggest you run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were changed look in Event Viewer.

When you go to User Accounts in Control Panel, select the account you want to change the picture for, then click Change the picture, you should see these listed:

can't find xp pictures for user accts

the sfc/scannow- at run, tells me that file can't be found. I also typed sfc/scannow without the - and same message. Also when I go to user account settings and choose change picture I do not get the thumbnails. Iget choice of browse pictures (which gives me sample pictures from something else, which isn't the ones from xp) or choice #2 is from scanner camera. So this isn't working out here. Thank you Clo

Use the Browse feature when changing the picture and go to:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures

You don't have to type it in, just click the "Browse for pictures" button when you open the "Change Picture" feature of the User Accounts. Then lead it to that location on your drive.

ps. When to do type paths like that, you must enclose them with quotes symbols if they have spaces embedded in them:

    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures\duck.bmp "

If, for some reason, that image isn't on your drive, then you'll find a copy of it in the i386 folder, along with the other default images. It will be compressed however and named duck.bm_ so you'll need to extract it.

Unless I misread the post the first part of the problem is this ....
    clo

    The SFC command is ....

    sfc /scannow

With a space - no hyphen to follow. Sorry if this was not clear.

    no picture choices

Have tried all of the above. The sfc /scannow does nothing, just keeps asking for the cd which is in and open. TheC:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures I went there to all users etc. and the only file I can get to come up is the Mom account, which is the one I started with, that has the wrong choices to begin with. I now have the win xp media edition cd in and have found the file i386, so which file under that do I use to get all of them? I would just as soon be able to have those pictures to choose from. thank a lot for the help and patience. G'Ma Clo

Download this file and run it to Repair the default picture folder for user accounts.

After you run that file to completion, you should have all of your default pictures back in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures\ folder and available for choosing when changing the picture on your accounts.

SFC (system file checker) when run with the /scannow switch scans the PC for missing or damaged system files and tries to replace any it finds.

If you did not have any system files that were damaged or were not missing some needed system files, the utility would not be asking for the CD. It is indicating that something needs fixing.

Which version of XP are you running?

Clo, Now you may want to search your drive for *.bmp and see if you have duplicates of those files. Perhaps they got moved accidentally. If not then you may wonder how they get deleted and how to prevent that in the future.

For the sake of keeping this thread technically accurate for later users, the SFC /SCANNOW command will not replace any files that aren't classed as Protected System Files. The bit map pictures for user icons are not classified that way and consequently won't be replaced by running SFC /SCANNOW.

However, since you indicated that running SFC /SCANNOW caused you to be asked for the install cd, you can assume that some other files are also missing and that they are indeed important Protected System Files. You should familiarize yourself with the proper procedure for replacing those files with fresh copies.

    SFC /SCANNOW instructions.
