    Here's something you could try,

Go to Tools > Accounts menu, select the culprit email account from the list, click the Properties button. Click the Advanced tab, then for the incoming mail server section, tick the box next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) ". The port number should automatically change to 995, if not, change it manually.

    Now try Send/Recv button.

There are many other reasons why you could get this error message. Increasing the Server Timeout found in the same location mentioned above could help, though usually not...

    Hope this works for you.

Thanks for your response, seemingly the only logical answer to date.....as you imply, so much seems trial and error.

In actual fact I had to resort to reloading OE and since then has worked ok.

I will however take on board your suggestion for future reference.

Would you please explain how locking in the "995" actually works or what it does and if, though everything is OK at the moment would it have any adverse or noticable effect/difference if I followed your suggestion NOW....as a "security measure "??????

    Thanks for your time

Thanks for posting back. Glad to see you got things working.

The 995 refers to the port number usually reserved for incoming SSL (Secure Socket Layer) network comunications. The standard port number for POP mail is 110.

Port numbers are just a simple way of letting an application know how to direct and handle incoming traffic (outgoing traffic is usually sent via a randomly selected free port)

In OE, if you don't indicate that incoming traffic requires a secure connection, and you use the 995 port, you probably won't get your emails, and in fact the connection will probably time-out because the application is expecting encrypted information.

If all is working fine without requiring an SSL connection, then don't worry, and leave the port number as 110.

Hope my brief and somewhat ambiguous explanation helps.
