After my computer blew up I am unable to access either of the two hard drives that were installed in it. Looks like I should have got one of those external Hard Drives sooner.

Does anyone know what I could try to be able to access these hard drives?

I would really save allot of time if I could get data from at least one since they both have the files I need on them.

    Thanks

What have you done so far? Have you replaced any parts and how are the drives configured?

Is there another thread about the pc blowing up?

Are the drives in the same blownup pc or another one?

Sounds like Murphy's Law has arrived at Space Station #5. For starters, can you see the drives in your BIOS and if not, have you tried to re-detect them?
Doubtful that your settings got significantly altered with this "shocking experience" but you may also want to try re-setting your CMOS with the outside chance that a quick cure may still be possible.

    ;)

The drives are from the blown up computer but I'm tryin to access them from the new one.

    Kinda weird:

Wd Rapture = SATA (which windows sees as a removable storage device and the DFI (motherboard) tech. say's thats normal.

So on the secondary IDE I have two dvd drives.

No matter what I do or how I configure them .. when I boot up with either one hooked up the computer goes to configuring Raid screen and just sits there.

The AUTO Raid option is turned off in the bios?

Rockster.. I did go into the bios and try and auto detect them but no go..

I'm trying not to panic but it don't look good.

    Thanks

Sounds like the drive electronics may be fried. However that being said how much data is on them? If you have a lot of data I read somewhere a guy took the electronis from a good drive to use in his identical fried drive and he was successful in getting his data out.

OK, I thought you were trying to access them from old machine with a new PSU.

Do you have an operating system installed that is running normally on the SATA drive when your 2 questionable drives aren't connected?

Sure do and it wasn't easy :)

I'll fill ya in on a few secrets if you want?

Man .. I really want this data..

c:\main has a partition with a ghost image of D:\

    D:\ All the data files

Neither one will allow the computer to boot.

One thing I just thought of is I have a old 200meg hd.. I'll try hooking that up and see if maybe it's a problem with the main ide channel?

    Thanks Gang

Reset Boot order in Bios when you put those IDE's in so that it boots from your new machine's system drive, not the questionable IDE drives you just hooked up.

    Thanks Rockster,
Looks like I had all the important stuff backed up after all.. didn't realize I had it till I started going thru my desk :)

There is stuff on those hard drive's I'd like to have but nothin that can't be replaced.

I'll give it a shot on my really old computer later on this week when I get some time off.

In the mean time Wester digital is sending out a new 120g hd so it looks like I only lost the 6.4gig so not to bad.. I will definatly be backing up to a external device from now on.

I also found a old 6.4gig that clicls when powered on. Gonna try the freezer deal and see if I can access that one also.

    Thanks Again

Nothing against externals but you may also want to investigate removable drive bays which will permit you to slide drives in & out whenever it suits your fancy.
