My home network consists of 3 pc's, all running xp pro. We are connected together with a Microsoft Basestation (router). I can see the other pc's and their shared folders, but when they try to access my shared folders the following error occurs:
\\(pc name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.

This use to work, but I hadn't tried it for a while so I don't know what might have changed to cause this.
I don't use a soft firewall, I let the basestation do that. It assigns DHCP addresses. I have been through all posts about this and have tried everything. Any other ideas? I'm sure it's a setting someplace but I have run out of places to look.
    Help.

Are you running Windows XP Pro with simple file sharing disabled or enabled? That makes a big difference.

If you disabled Simple File Sharing, check the Local Security Policies (Control
Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model ", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves ".

If it is set to class then make sure you add an identical user account and password that is defined for both computers. With simple file sharing enabled in Windows XP, make sure the Guest is enabled. That is affected by "net user guest /active:{yes,no} ".

I have simple file sharing enabled. Where do I find the setting to make sure the Guest is enabled.

Is it better to disable simple file sharing? What does this change in the way files are shared? Do the users have to logon when accessing my folders?

With simple file sharing then everyone on network can access each other with no restrictions. To grant user permissions, that is done by disabling Simple File Sharing and adding an identical user account. To make sure the Guest is enabled using SFS, follow these steps indicated in this MS KB Article.

Which ever account you use then add that on the other. To learn more about file sharing between all versions of Windows, please see the following link.

I have tried what the article has recommended with no success.

I am going to uninstall sp2 and see if that helps to correct the problem or allows me to make changes that will work.
