    Hi

I'm using AOL9 and WinXp home. Does anyone know why the AOL software doesn't recognise the Xp firewall as running when it is?

I've checked with Shields Up and everything appears ok.

What is AOL doing or not doing because of the firewall?

    Hi

When you first start aol, prior to signing on, the aol software detects and identifies parental controls, av software, pop up blocker and firewall. It marks everything as running except for the firewall. That is marked as 'not running'. The xp firewall is running.

You should look around AOL web site as I would guess this is a common problem.

When SP2 first came out, it couldn't detect that Norton Anti Virus was installed...

Might see if any of this helps. XP's firewall isn't that great to begin with. Might consider something like ZoneAlarm.

Thanks for that but, all my programs are running ok. It's aol that is not recognising the firewall.

If you want to assure yourself that WF is really working, then through the Control Panel > Security Center > Windows Firewall > Advanced tab > Security Logging > Settings > in the log settings dialog box: check "Log dropped Packets" and click the save as bar: \WINDOWS\pfirewall.log. That log is accessible with Notepad.

So if its working, then that's AOL's problem and don't worry about it.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for the replies.

I know it's an aol problem, just trying to find the fix. AOL themsleves are of no help. They say the firewall should be recognised by the software.

I'll just have to live with it, it's no big problem.

Easiest way to fix it is to go to KW: Firewall Express and download AOL's McAfee firewall. Considering the firewall included within Windows is just run-of-the-mill, having another doesn't hurt and AOL definitely recognizes its own. Other than that, you're right, it's just a function of AOL to mention what you have running... it doesn't change anything.
