I have a laptop with Win2000. When I tried to access msconfig, it can't be found. Does it exist within 2000? I seem to recall getting a file repair procedure from someone here, but can't recall which OS that was associated with. Would that be the way to restore msconfig, if it even exists within 2000?Also, this laptop has a gruesome wallpaper(IE downloaded one) that I changed to the stock "PARADISE" . However, the offending wallpaper appears briefly before Paradise comes up. Paradise then stays as background. This same offensive background then pops up again upon shutdown. How can I get rid of it?
I have just switched to Comcast from Bellsouth. I'll try and see if I can find a place within this site to update my info or profile.
I'll check back here for any response. To the person responding, if any, would you be so kind as to tell me where I can change my email address. I'll keep trying in the interim.
    Thanks.
    Vic

Please disregard the part about email address change

I found it. It was embarrassingly easy. Sorry about that.

    MSconfig and that background picture

Thanks for the links, Newt. Any ideas on getting rid of that background picture? When I got this laptop, the picture was set as background, and in the display properties Background tab, it was identified as an IE download. I changed it to Paradise, and then to Solar Eclipse. As soon as I changed it, the IE download item disappeared. It is also unavailable in the Wallpaper folder when you look for it with BROWSE on the Background page. I couldn't find it in the WINNT root directory, yet it pops up during boot-up for about 2 seconds, then the background that I selected comes up and stays. Upon shutdown, it pops up again for a few seconds, and then Windows shuts down.
Any idea about how to get rid of it?
I was hoping that I'd find it with msconfig, but I doubt it.

    Try a start=>run line and
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
assuming you are running at least SP3 on the PC.

If you aren't at SP4, I'd suggest installing it first.

    Thanks Newt

I ran the file recovery routine. It asked for the Win2000 Cd. Ran to completion. The offensive picture is still there. I ran a search for all .gif files on the computer, but couldn't locate it. I then ran a search for all .jpgs. Also didn't yield any results. As I mentioned, the picture was first listed as a "set as wallpaper" download, so it identified itself as Internet explorer(something)
in the list of available backgrounds. When I first changed the background to "paradise" the IE entry disappeared, but the photo comes up fro two or three seconds before settling down to the background I chose. Then, upon shutdown, it shows up again before the screen goes black.
By the way, importing msconfig from the link you gave me also worked just fine.
I can't help but feel that getting rid of this photo should be easy, but it's got me beaten.

Got me stumped. No idea why/how that pic is popping up for a second or two.

"Wallpaper" pictures can be located pretty much anywhere on your PC though. There are some standard locations but there is nothing magical about them.

    Thanks, Newt

Turns out the picture was a .bmp . I only looked for .gif and .jpg.
    Problem is now gone.
Thanks for your continued attention and efforts.
I really appreciate all you do.
