    Hi all,
I remember some years ago, reading someone's advice to force the Swap file (paging file) to stay at 2 GB. That is, the min. size would be 2 GB, and the max. size the same. It was suggested that, assuming the HD could afford to supply this much space without suffering, that the swap file would not be constantly re-sizing itself. I tried it and I can't tell much difference...... Any merit in this? (BTW, my machines use Win2Kpro and WinXPpro.)

    In general...

You should not need to change the swap file size. It all depends on your application needs. Some applications will require a certain size swap file. If the OS alone is having issues, then you should just add more RAM.

IMO, yes - fragmentation of the Page file is prevented and, in theory speeds up operations. If you are using Photoshop, which uses a dedicated Swap file (Scratch Disk) it saves the two getting intertwined and PS from complaining that both files are on the same drive.

The 'optimum' size for a fixed Page file is 1.5 x installed RAM, though many consider this to be OTT. I have a dedicated partition for my Page file on XP Pro and put the PS Scratch Disks on other partitions.

Many opinions on this - for my part I have the Page file as posted above - fixed size and 1.5 Gb RAM. Works for me :)

    I agree completely.

We just don't know what his requirements are.
