Microsoft Corp. released a cumulative patch to fix six new vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, the most serious of which could allow code of attacker's choice to run.

I received that one yesterday. Today I am getting a critical update for 5.5 SP 2. I've been putting this one off since it first came out, but am wondering if I really should download it now since it showed up as a critical. I could use a little feedback.

    Thank you.

    :)

I'm not aware of any adittional security patches. I post all available patches here as soon as I receive notification about them. Probably you are receiving a notification (from Windows update or IE?) about a previous patch which you didn't install???

As before, this patch does not apply to IE 5.01SP2 running Win98.
However, I see a security update for IE on Windows Update for Win98.

Very interesting. The update request for the 5.5 SP2 came to me as a Critical Update. I didn't think they posted them like that. When I go to the page I do see other listings for recommendations, but never saw this as a critical. The criticals are usually just patches for security. I guess I'll download it anyway, since it's been out for a while now and maybe I do need it. I'm not ready to download IE6 yet!

    Thanks anyway.

    :)

This is for bstarr who started a thread elsewhere (closed by Arie) with the following comment
"May 15 patch disabled frames and hyperlinks
I use IE 6 and Outlook Express 6. After installing the May 15 patch I can no longer open frames or use hyperlinks contained in incoming e-mail. I checked security and it is at the minimum setting. "

    The MS Security bulletin
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-023.asp
warned that such loss of frames and HTML capability would occur when the patch was installed. (click the Technical Details button.) Don't know what you can do about it. You cannot uninstall the patch.

    Ya gotta read it ALL

That warning was precisely why I didn't get or want this particular patch. I'm not too concerned about any hackers ever getting into my computer anyway. Why would they want to. There isn't anything in it. :p

    bstarr,

This kind of thing is the best argument I can think of for having something like GoBack in your system. My system came with GoBack already installed when I ordered it. If it hadn't, I'd have beaten a path to the nearest computer store to by it.

Go to Roxio and check it out. If your time and sanity is worth anything to you this thing is worth twice what they charge for it.

No, I have no connection with this program whatsoever. Just a very satisfied user. :D

    Hi Jim,

The MS02-023 bulletin says, under Summary,
I'm using IE5.5sp2 and have chosen to read e-mail in the Restricted Sites zone by going to OE Tools, Options, Security tab and switching the "IE security zone to use" option from the Internet zone to the Restricted sites zone. I haven't installed the patch yet but I guess I could switch back to the Internet Zone in Outlook Express security options if I wanted to reverse the effects of the patch to read a particular e-mail.

As far as hyperlinks no longer working in OE e-mails I'm thinking that they do work but might not open a NEW IE window. I'm guessing the hyperlink may be opening inside an existing IE window.

Here, here, indutch! I use GoBack, XP System Restore, and Novastor Instant Recovery. I believe in redundant protection. ;) (Belt, suspenders and bib overalls.)

I installed this latest patch on my XP w/IE6 and have had no problems yet. Everything still works as usual. E-mail links work fine still. I have no need of the Restricted Zone so whatever it does to that is of no concern to me. I'm a big boy and choose to see everythuing. ;) No other users.

This gets confusinger and confusinger. L. Carrol

The more you read the more you need. I would recommend that if you don't have some fail safe recovery method to leave these patches alone until they survive the test of time. They're never that urgent anyway.

    OFFTOPIC

Did Leo G. Carrol say that? I loved Topper! http://members.tripod.com/~JCHOMA/toppertv.htm

If you meant Lewis Carroll he said, `Curiouser and curiouser' ...the entire Project Gutenberg Etext of Alice in Wonderland is at
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext97/alice30h.htm .... 'curiouser and curiouser' is in CHAPTER II The Pool of Tears

I would recommend that if you don't have some fail safe recovery method to leave these patches alone until they survive the test of time. They're never that urgent anyway.

You can say that again. I didn't install the March 28th cumulative IE patch until last week, but then I mostly use Netscape. My husband likes using IE though.

Actually Alice, I think it was Vince Lombardi now that I think about it. ;)

You must allow me some poetic license, I'm not a well man. (pun intended there) Oh well.

My patch is still working and hasn't blown out yet. No problems anywhere that I notice.

    Best regards.
