    Hi All,

Without having to open up the computer case.

How can I find out if my machine was built with 2.1 PCI compliance or better?

I would like to replace a sound card that requires 2.1 PCI compliance.

Win XP Professional Service Pack 2
    Intel Pentium 3
    1.0 GHz 512 Ram

    Thank you,

    Tom

    Hi Tom

the manual for the computer (or its motherboard) would be a good place to start ;)

everest is a good system info utility which will help you identify what's in the box

    best wishes, HJ

I ran through Everest and System info on my m/c when I first saw this post - no mention of version though - and nothing re. version in my mobo manual.

Googling brought up the specs for PCI - 2.11 came out ~1999, so you should be OK. I don't think you will learn anything from looking in the case :)

    oh dear!

some manuals more helpful than others it seems...

everest's really good for "looking" inside without actually opening up the box

    ==

another way to do it, try to suss what the chipset is - manual or everest should tell you

intel or VIA chipsets no problem

AMD chipset (PCI2.1) can give trouble with a (very) few soundcards

    Hugh and Pete,

    I found the manual.

The only thing I could find is that my three pci slots are 32 bit.

The mother board is a M754LMR Amptron.

Date on the manual is January 2001.

Tried to search for info regarding pci, no luck.

    I'll try everest.

    Thank you,

    Tom

SiSoftware Sandra (in my signature) has it. There is a PCI section.

matt's suggestion of SiSandra is what you need, it will give you the answer "hole in one" very easily

the hardest thing about Sandra is getting it from the website :( requires a little perseverance

I tracked down your chipset as far as Acer Labs (ALi aladdin TNT2) (aka ALi GFX PRO) (not the same as other things called GFX PRO), but ran into a problem (not being fluent in Chinese or Japanese, and Google couldn't translate the pages)

the other advantage to using Sandra is that you will avoid any confusion if the motherboard has been released in various revision versions and they've changed the hardware

( rapidly starting to realise just how lucky I am that all 3 machines here use Intel chipsets)
not surprising, the PCISIG (special interests group) sit on the data (grrrr) and charge horrible amounts of money to let you "join the club "

    best wishes, HJ

    Hi All,

    I installed the sound card.

    No problems with the hardware.

My next issue is with the software.

I'm trying to work that out with creative.

    Thanks to all,

    Tom
