I am trying to upgrade to W2K on a computer that was running W95. A friend gave me a "boot disk" for W98 and said that I could use it to wipe out the hard drive on a W95 machine. I did the format c:/u/c and it formatted the c: drive. When I try and do a clean install of W2K, I get an error message saying that the program can't be run from DOS. Someone told me I have to go into the bios and change the way the computer boots up so that it will boot from the CD ROM drive first. Can anyone tell me how to get into the bios and change the boot sequence? That is if that is the correct procedure to take. If there is another solution, I would be greatful for any assistance.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brad

To get into BIOS you usually press the DEL key during the initial boot sequence.

On some Compaq's it is F10 when the cursor is on the top right of the screen.

On most Gateways it is F1 - unless its a laptop which is F2.

Some really old W95 boxes did not have a boot from CDrom option yet.

If so you will need to make a (4?) floppy start up set to load the W2k enviroment and begin setup.

"..make a (4?) floppy start up set.. "

Yup. 4 floppy set it is.

brad r - if you do need the floppy set to start the install, you can make them from the 2K CD but it sounds like you'll need to do it from another PC.

Or you can run Setup by booting up with that Win98 startup floppy and choosing cdrom support. Then navigate to the i386 folder on the CD (at the A:> prompt, type D: assuming that your cdrom is the D: drive, then "CD i386" without the quotes). Then type "Winnt.exe" and Setup will run.
