I am using Netscape 7.2 for e-mail and news reading.

Some, but not all, messages with a currency amount using the traditional "crossed L" pounds sign are appearing without the sign and also without the amount before the decimal point.

For example GBP 123.45 appears as ?45 with the pence amount but not the full pounds.

It appears correctly if I use Outlook Express. The amount I am quoting should look like this:- £123.45

Of course I am using a UK keyboard in which the UK pound sign "£ ", is on the "3" key. The dollar symbol "$" is shared with number "4" Anybody have any ideas?

    Hi dandl,

Apparently, you're being punished because the U.K. hasn't adopted the Euro. :D

    I don't have a specific answer for you, but I do have a workaround. Download a little freebie called AllChars, which gives you easy access to all kinds of characters, such as £, ¢, ø, ä. ç, è, ¿, ¡, ¼,½,¾, °, ¹, ², ³, â„¢, ®, ©, §, and many, many others.

I would not be able to verify this unless I get an e-mail. But the number 3, in a US keyboard is shared by the # sign (number, to the best of my recollection). It must be the way the message is written, because I copied Dan's original message, and sent it from one address to another of mine, and it came out as viewed in the post.

I assumed he meant messages he was writing, rather than reading, simply because of his reference to the keyboard. I can think of no reason why inbound messages wouldn't appear as sent.

Thanks Jim, but I don't think AllChars would help me.

I can type all the characters I currently need including the dreaded € .

It's getting them displayed in some incoming e-mails that is the problem.

    Guess I assumed wrong!

I can't think of any reason why inbound messages should be posing a problem, unless something has gotten corrupted in NS 7.2. I understand that 8.0 is available now, so you might try upgrading to see if the problem disappears. Better yet, switch to Thunderbird and Firefox.

Netscape8 is still beta, and is equivalent to Firefox, browser only.

Just to make it clear, it is only inbound messages which have problems and then only some of them. If the currency amount is mentioned in the subject, then that is shown OK but wrongly in the body of the message.

i.e. £1,234.56 would appear OK in the subject but ?56 in the main text

As some test messages appear OK, I guess that there is some incompatability between Netscape 7.2 and the method of sending.

Just out of interest, and nothing to do with the problem, the # key on a UK keyboard is shared with ~ at the right hand end of the row starting "asdfgh "

If anyone has any other ideas, I would be very grateful to hear of them.
