barryjeffs - Welcome to the Board :)

Just feasible that you have a temperature problem - running games can be very CPU intensive, not to say video intensive.

Download Everest and check out the CPU and mobo temps. Check if you can that the CPU and case fans (if any) are running.

Look in Event Viewer and see if there are any error messages when the computer shuts down.

Right click My Computer Icon > Manage > Event Viewer. Double click on a message to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard. Paste any relevant messages here.

When you say your computer shuts down, do you mean it quits w/o a warning, or does it try to reboot, or does it shut down normally- "Windows is saving your settings" etc?? If you are getting a STOP error, it would help to know the message you are seeing.

Pete, he may not be able to get Everest if he can't download anything.

Appreciate your point re downloading, but the computer apparently shuts down only when playing games, either from CD or from a download - to HD?

I appreciate that you are new around here, but the way to post back into a thread you started is to open that thread and hit the Reply button. Type your message and then hit Submit Reply. If you wish you can preview your reply by hitting the Preview Post button before submitting it.

Please do not start a new thread with your reply - I have merged your threads.

I am going out for the evening right now, but will check back when I return. In the meantime I feel sure that those others who have already replied will do so again.

Re Event Viewer - I'm afraid that I cannot simplify the instructions any further, except to add - look in Application and System, double click on the folder to open.

It does sound like a heat problem. Try opening the case and setting an ordinary fan that you'd use in a room so that it blows into the case. Then try playing the game and see if it still quits on you. If not, you'll know it's a cooling problem.

It's not really clear to me if the system shuts down or restarts. If it restarts, right click on My Computer>properties>advanced and then click the settings button where it says startup and recovery. Where it says system failure, uncheck the line that says automatically restart. The next time it happens you should get an error message. Write it down and post the details of it here.
