    Lost digital images

A professional photographer sent me, by e-mail, digital camera photos of my daughter's wedding. I transferred the images from the e-mail to my Ulead Photo Express v2.0 program on my computer, resized the images, and stored them in a hard drive and copied them to floppy discs. These photos appear as JPEG files both on the hard drive and on the floppies. They have been retrieved from the Photo Express files several times for printing in the past.

After several months these photo images can not be retrieved from the floppies or the hard drive. When clicking on a particular image (new icons in a square with red dot) a window appears called Picture Viewer. When you click OPEN, the files appear and when you click on them a smaller window appears, but no image whatsoever. When clicking on image icons of pictures taken with a film camera, scanned and put into file, everything is fine and picture appears.

Question: Are these digital images both on my hard drive and on floppies corrupted? Are the digitally obtained images lost? Can they be recovered?

Indycolt --Well, something has changed since you put those images on the floppies. Like maybe you installed a new operating system?
You have not told us what version of Windows you are runnning.
Anyway, if those pictures are still .jpeg files (you can check by right clicking on one, then Properties) they should open in Internet Explorer or Irfanview (and I am sure other graphics editors). In WinXP, try right click on one of these files, Open With, Choose Program and chose one of those programs instead of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. If that works, do that all again and this time check the box at the bottom of the page "Always use the selected program... ", OK.
If you are not running WinXP, post back.

    To Welsjim: Thanks for answering.

An update. I am running on WIN98 and using an old Gateway. I recently installed Firefox, Norton Works 2005, and Thunderbird mail.

Also, if I click on any of the pictures (jpeg files) and use as an attachment in an e-mail, they are fine. I am just unable to get them back into my Photo Express Album file, but will in time.

    It is a curious problem.

    A thought ....
An interesting exercise would be to attach one or more of the jpegs to an email to yourself and, on receipt of the email, save the attachment(s) to the hard drive and see if you can open them in Photo Express Album.

Does this problem coincide with the installation of Norton Works 2005?

    To all:

My photos have returned. All is now fine. It was a problem with the Photo Exprss program (my errors). I reloaded all files from my floppies into the PE photo file and then transferred them onto the proper PE photo album. At that point I can alter the photos, resize them or whatever.

I am satisfied. Nothing gained, nothing lost. Thanks.:)

Indycolt--thanks for posting back. All's well that ends well. :)
P.S. In Win98 the procedure for getting to the "Open With..." window is different than what I suggested. You hold down Shift, while simutaneously right clicking a .jpeg file. That will you give you a choice of programs to use to open the .jpeg files. But since Photo Express Album was corrupt, that might not have helped anyway.
At least you now know how to chose a program to open a file in Win98. (The procedure mentioned works for any file type, not just .jpeg.)

As a fellow photographer I am delighted that the problem is sorted :)
