Over the last few days, whilst using a W2K Server SP4 box, the screen has paused, cleared and refreshed. The Event ID 1002, "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted." appears in the Application Log.

I was trawling the web for an answer, found JoeHobart's thread, and am hoping that he will extend his offer of help to me too.

I can't think of any software that was installed recently that coincides with this starting to happen.

Below is the results of running Dump Data Collection Tool. Does it throw any light on what might be causing it? Thanks for *any* pointers you might be able to offer.

it didnt resolve the symbols for ntdll, thats unusual. Do you have a hotfix installed specifically for ntoskrnl/ntdll?

It *appears* that its in the process of fooling with a toolbar, and it blowed up. I cant tell if its stack corruption, or an unloaded module callback. You've got a bunch of third party shell extensions in there, I also recommend you try shellexview to disable all the non microsoft shell extensions, and see where you stand after that.

Thanks for the reply. That was quick! :)

Um, not that I know of. It's just a W2K SP4 pretty much bang-up-to-date with patches. I did install it as single CPU originally with a dual-mobo board, and then fitted a single processor later, running "Update Driver" to make it use the 2nd processor. Dunno if that would constitute a kernel patch...

That's all a bit Greek to me, but I'll take a look at that app and see what it throws up.

    Thanks again, Joe! :)

Did you find a solution to the eplorer crashes and restarts? I'm having the same problem.

Nope. It even happened when I was logged on locally with no applications running. I'm still none the wiser :-\

    Aidan's problem

Aidan : looks like split.dll might be the cause of your problem. It's usually installed as part of the Split Shell Extension (an otherwise cool file splitting utility). I experienced severe explorer.exe crashes while the extension was installed, after I upgraded to XP SP2.

Try uninstalling the extension using Add/Remove Programs and see how it goes. In my case, doing this took care of the problem.

    Rgds,

    nh

Hey, thanks for the info. Never made the connection as it wasn't running as an app when the crashes occured, but that broadly tallies with when it was installed (and, yeah, it's a really handy utility).

Will see if that does the trick. Thanks for taking the time to post :)
