I need to lock out one user specifically. Exchange 2000 on Windows 2000 Advanced server. I need to deny 1 specific user from sending email.

Have you tried to disable the mailbox? Or does this person need to receive email?

I'm not sure how to get Exchange to deny send from one user. What you may want to do is setup a public folder that can receive email instead. Or configure that user as a POP3 user, and use the SMTP connector to deny their system send rights.
Otherwise if that user logged into a normal Outlook MAPI client or uses OWA, they would be able to send.

With the public folder, that user won't be able to send because Public folders can't send email.

    Hi Sue,

    This may work.

    Properties of the Mailbox Store.
    Limits

Check the box for Prohibit Send at (KB) and enter a value.
You can play with the size to meet your needs.

    Hope this helps.

    Please let us know.

setting prohibit send to 0 does not work. If I limit him to 1 k, he can still send out 1 line email.

using the pop3 methods would be a bit much. I have 650 users and for punishment they are denied send for 2 weeks. I am constantily denying send. Unfortunately changing send to 0 is accepted as a null and opens it wide up. I set it to 1k and it limits them to a 1-liner. I need to block send completely to specific users.

Since this seems to be a big issue for you, why don't you just Microsoft.

Please let us know what they say, if you call.

I've looked in a few places just in case I might have missed something, but you will only be able to prohibt send if a users mail box reachs a certain level. Meaning, if they get like 2 MB of data in their mailbox you can stop them from sending any more.
However for the user to get around this, they just can empty their inbox to a PST or use a POP3 client.

    Hi Sue,

How about this, not sure it will work be it is worth a try.

Still set the sent limit to 1 k and put something in their Calendar either in the past or a year or so down the road. If you make the appt big enough, by adding alot of notes to it or something and either hide it from view or set it so they can't delete the appt.

That might work. Let us know what you think.
