Steve Gibson recommends that UPnP be disabled and even supplies a program to do this automatically for 'experts' like me.

I have done this, but when I view the 'Exceptions' list in the Windows Firewall, one of the Programs the Firewall is allowing access to is - "UPnP Framework ".

Does anyone know if these are these one and the same Programs?

    Many Thanks.

A rather extensive explanation of the XP firewall/UPnP relationship is in the MS Knowledge Base article, How Windows Firewall affects the UPnP framework in Windows XP Service Pack 2.

From scanning the article, it looks to me that if you don't need UPnP (which most, if not all home users don't), telling the XP firewall to block it is a good idea. Read it more throroughly, though, since I didn't and may have reached the wrong conclusion. ;)

The setting in windows firewall doesn't necessarily mean that UPnP is accessing the network. It only means that if the service wants to access it, it'll be allowed. If you have the service disabled it's not running and you can rest assured it's not accessing the network or internet. If it gives you added comfort, you can uncheck UPnP in windows firewall.
