unexpected resume failure

Toshiba Laptop, XP pro.
I left the computer running, with full operation for several minutes. I did not close the screen/lid. When I returned the screen was black and the fan was running in spurts. I could not get the machine to "come up" as usual by pressing the "enter" key or the "backspace" key. alt/ctrl/del also produced no response. I have included the current settings that I think might be pertinent to this issue. When I held the power button down for several seconds, then waited about 30 seconds and pressed the power button again there was a message:
"Resume Failed,
Press any key to continue." I did that and the machine booted apparently normally.

Settings
Running on AC power with 100% battery power
Cooling method Maximum performance
Full power properties:
Processor speed: full
Monitor brightness :8
Turn off monitor: 25 minutes
Turn off hard disk: 25 minutes
System standby: 15 minutes
System hibernate: Never

I have never seen or heard of this type error and wonder if it is an issue or just an anomaly. Thanks in advance. Jack

 

Click on start, on run, key in eventvwr.msc, click OK. Check for events that look related to the issue. Any you find, open and then click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to the clipboard and paste the results here. Only one copy of any specific error but if there are different ones, post each.

If I read the file that the link targets, it appears I may have a failing cable. Have you any other thoughts? Thanks.
