Running Windows95 at present on a used computer. System will take 98. I have been looking on Ebay to perhaps purchase. Need some help, what is the difference in 98SE full edition and 98SE OEM? Is there just an 'upgrade' to 98SE from 95?
I see comments about having drivers on hand for your system. Can I save the drivers that are on it now? Where do I find them? doesn't the OS you are buying have drivers?
Realize I am a beginner to the world of installing and updating. Are there "lessons" somewhere I can read through to help with all my questions?
    thank you
    Don

I believe 98SE FULL would be your better choice.

Which version of 95 do you have ? The original or 95OSR2 ( 95B ) ? If OSR2 ( which is 32 bit I believe ) you could upgrade to 98SE right over top of it. ( I did with no problems ) But you MUST BOOT FROM A FLOPPY. And watch to make sure the new Windows goes into the EXISTING Windows folder.

This should also handle the driver problem temporarily.

NO. 95 drivers will not ( or at least may not ) work in 98.

I would suggest you go to the Website for your hardware and find the proper drivers.

ok....so what exactly do I need drivers for? and how do I determine exactly who the manufacturer of said equipment is? is it like the modem, sound card. cdrom floppy and such? the moniter? how about a list of what I may need. does each component in a computer need a driver?
sorry I am so ignorant of this stuff.

Device Manager should give you some clues to the equipment.

The more important drivers ( at least to begin with ) would be for Modem, Sound Card and Video card.

The only thing I can say about the version of 95 is that the file dates on the 95CD that I have are 5/1/1997 which I would assume is the newer version ( OSR2 ). It also has USB support. So that I believe verifies my thoughts.

    And in the Setup files there is both a setup.exe (16bit ? ) and a setup32.exe (32bit ? ).

there is only a setup.exe in a Windows95 folder no USB connections on this baby so there would be no support......I called my daughter...she said give it up....this computer is almost 10 years old! LOL guess I better leave well enough alone. I just need to get a "newer" computer
    thank you for the suggestions

That might be a good Idea.

But at the same time I have one running Win98SE that started out with Dos and Win3.1 on it. It is not the speedest thing in the world but good enough for the kids to mess with.

Hey, I have this Mac PowerPC 7200/90 that I bought from apple. One day I switched to windows and got 3.11. Later I got 95. And I contemplated installing 98 last year but instead took that NT Full Install disc that came with Visual Basic.

98SE FULL CD = Windows + Microsoft ShovelWare

    98SE OEM = Windows +OEM ShovelWare + Microsoft ShovelWare

Also, it's nice to have a real Windows CD so you won't have to rely on "recovery" from OEMs that may fix windows, but they almost allways reformat and always dump all that shovelware onto you.

Not if you handle the install properly.

Do it the MS way and you may be right.

That I will not argue or even disagree with at all.
