My e-mail program is Eudora 6.2 on a Dell Dimension with XPHome & SP2

I read (I think), that if the first entry in ones address book is "!000" (no quotes)
it will prevent worms such as the resurgent MyDoom from being able to harvest these and send out false messages to the list.

Is this truth or urban ledgend?

    Thanks

About 99.5% urban legend. It will stop a very few, very stupid critters. However, it is harmless - just ineffective.

Better yet, get the Courier Email program available here at www.rosecitysoftware.com. Courier's address book is IMMUNE to mass mailing worms!

Well, if you are willing to change email programs, Outlook Express has a setting on its Tools|Options|Security tab to notify you if an application wants to send outgoing messages.

That's a decent feature, but it doesn't stop mass email worms. Most of these worms have their own smtp server to send email and will extract addresses from the *.wab files, oe folders, other text based files, html files, html email files, etc. If OE is not running at the time, it cannot notify you that an application is sending email.

TonyT--Would a firewall stop what you describe? I have given OE permission to access the internet.

yes, most software firewalls block outbound connections, thus if had a trojan that was sending mail, the firewall would detect and block it, unless said trojan renames itself to that of a common trusted app.

Thanks to all for the information.

I'm happy with Eudora, and was just curious. I haven't had a worm and in addition to several anti-virus tools, I am very careful about what I open

    just a quick comment...

You mention "several antivirus tools" hopefully you are only running one. Having more than one antivirus running can cause conflicts. One good A/V program that is kept updated on a regular basis should be a adequate. Now "spyware" protection... that's another story. :D

Actually, I don't think it would get by the firewall even if it did this. I know for sure it wouldn't get by Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm recognizes any changes in a program and will stop it cold. If I install a newer version of a program that's already been granted access, the first time I run the program after the upgrade I'm always prompted as to whether to allow the "new" program to access the net.
