    Hey everyone,

about a week ago I had to send my laptop off to HP/Compaq to have the mobo replaced and I got it back today. I reformatted it and reinstalled all drivers and could not get the wireless to even come on. I reinstalled drivers a second time and finally got the wireless light on the laptop to light up but now I can not get it to even access my router. I have the same settings as I did before I sent it and all the other wireless in the home still works with those settings.

I went to wireless networks>Properties and removed the prefered wireless network and re installed it..still no luck. I went to start>run>cmd and ipconfig /all to make sure I had the mac address correct..I do...still no luck. I decided to hard line the laptop to the router to get on line and update it completely... and I even went as far as to install the limited or no connectivity fix for MS...still no luck. I am not sure what to do next except for maybe remove the wireless network and start over from scratch :(. Any ideas or siggestions would be apprciated. all 4 pc's are running XP Home SP2 and completly updated.

    Regards,
    FireDancer

    Hi FireDancer, okay let's see.

    1) Have you enabled WEB or WPA encryption on your router? If yes, then disable them and see if it works without encryption enabled.
    2) You said you decided to hard line the laptop to the router to get on line and update it completely. Did this work for you? I didn't see you said this worked for you but maybe I missed it.
    3) Have you tried downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website?
    4) Have you looked at the stick thread "Limited or No connectivity" Bug Fix Here at the top of the forum or was that what you were referring to in your post?
    5) Is your winsock keys corrupted? This can be a problem. Try rebuilding the Winsock LSP chain. To do this, since you have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP installed, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the Microsoft Windows XP workstation as an administrator.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
    netsh Winsock reset
    4. Restart your computer.

Yes I have wep enabled and yes they work disabled as well ..all but the laptop. I also read and used the "Limited or no connectivity" update still no luck.

I tried your suggestion for winsock and got only an error, are you sure you typed it in right?

Today I set the router to default and reset everything and amazingly enough the laptop found the wireless connection and even went on the net for about 2 minutes  then when I came back to it it said "not connected" :(

If I go into CMD and type in ipconfig /all it says the media is disconnected????? under my ethernet adaptor. I dont get it, it worked just fine before it was sent to HP/Compaq for mobo replacement. If I try to ipconfig /renew I get a error saying media is disconnected  I am not sure what to do now!!! All the other machines are working just fine!!!

    That was my mistake.

At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    netsh winsock reset catalog

If you tried all of the above then I suggest maybe try another network card and see if that works. You could try going to Device Manager, expand the network adapters and uninstall. Then click "Scan for hardware changes" and see if reinstalling the network card will work first. I've pretty much reached the limit to my knowledge on this subject.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the the network card and drivers several times. At this point I think I will call service help back at HP/Compaq and let them give me some ideas. I do not want to alter the machine in any way due to the fact that it might void what I have left on my warranty. If the machine was out of warranty I would have no problem craking it open :) but for now Im gonna let them do that....allthough letting them work on it is what started this problem LOL  Thanks again for all your suggestions.
