    Hi,

I have built a server that I wish to use to share files on my home network and also make available on the internet.

At present it runs Windows XP Pro and I have setup a number of shares which are accessible as planned.

The server uses WOL so I can start up the server remotely. I was wondering how the server could then be closed down remotely? It appears to me that I would need to be running an application to do this but when the machine is WOL powered no local account will be logged on!

Is it possible to have Windows XP run applications even though no user is logged on remotely? Users will, however, need to log on to the server across the network.

I am now wondering if I should be using a Windows Server instead? I have no experience with this but do known Windows XP fairly well. Would Windows Server be a better choice?

What would be a good starting point for information regarding Windows Server operating systems?

    Regards Basher

you may have options to shutdown the xp remotely, quoted from http://www.howtonetworking.com/shutdown.htm

How to shutdown a Win2000/XP remotely

To remote shutdown windows 2000/XP, 1) run MMC>Computer Management; right-click Computer Management (local)>connect to another computer; select the remote computer; right-click Computer Management (remote computer)>Properties>Advanced>startup & Recovery>shutdown. 2) use command shutdown \\computername. Note: The specified computer may not shut down when you use the Shutdown.exe tool to shut it down. This behavior can occur if the Unlock Computer dialog box appears on the desktop, or if the computer is locked. 3) Other remote access software such as Terminal Service, pcAnywhere, Netmeeting, VNC and Telnet. 4) Use Shutgui.exe from NT Resource Kit

    Hi,

Many thanks for the information. Never realised that it was possible to connect to another computer in this way - opens up a world of possibilities!

I did try to connect but got the error "Access is denied ", however I was able to logon to the remote machine to access its shares! I suspect I have disabled remote logon in Control Panel|System|Remote thinking that it was a security issue. Is it a security issue?

    Hi,

I enabled remote logon for on the remote machine but was still unable to control it as suggested in your previous post. I keep getting the error message "Access is denied ".
The machine does not have any firewall or anti-virus (yet) so I am wondering if anything else needs to be installed or enabled in order to enable remote access?

    Regards Basher
