I finallly switched from Win98SE to WinXP.
Surely I'm missing something here but I can't handle files in folders the same way.

In Win98 I had a general folder where I dumped my digital photos (.jpg's) as I acquired them, manipulating and organizing them when I had time. When I got enough (50-100), I'd move them to dedicated locations elsewhere. In this general folder, I used a view with small icons. I could drag and drop them around that folder, with bunches of like stuff together.

In WinXP, the only way I can get the small icons is choosing View>List or Details. I can't move them around in the folder, they snap back to original position. Another problem is they only list vertically rather than horizontally.

If I choose View>Icons, they can be individually dragged and dropped within the folder, they also list horizontally. However, the icons are only one larger size (Win98SE let me choose "view small icons ").

Working with these large icons is next to impossible when I have 50-100 of them.

Can I make the "Icon view" icons smaller?
Or, can I get the "List view" icons capable of drag&drop?

With this issue as with most cases where you could do something in 98, it's a matter of locating where & how since to the best of my recollection, XP allows almost all things that were possible in 98 and quite a few that weren't.

The leftmost two pics are a pair and start with the left - icon size. The rightmost will hopefully 'cure' the snap-back behavior.

Here's another one that changes the size of both windows explorer icons and those on the desktop. Right click on the desktop>properties>appearance>effects. Make sure the line that says "use large icons" isn't checked. If it's already not checked but icons are still to large, close that window and click on the advanced button. Where it says item, select icon and to the right of that you can change the size to any size you want. I believe the default is 32. If you cut that in half and apply it you'll have tiny icons on both the desktop and in windows explorer. You'll have to experiment to find a size that suits you.

Thanks, folks, I've basically already looked at those options. I'm not willing to have tiny icons on the desktop to suit the few folders I need the small icons in.

A folder does offer two icon sizes (view>icon vs. view>list or detail). I would have to think there's some registry hack that could give me small icons in a folder's icon view.

Try TweakUIXP and navigate to Explorer > Thumbnails - see below.
