I can't seem to find an answer to this problem on the board. If I have overlooked it, I apologize.
For some reason, System Restore has stopped working. Regardless of which restore date I choose, I get the message that the system could not be restored.
I have been to Microsoft Support and still have not found an answer.
I am running Windows XP Pro. I have Adaware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Norton Antivirus Professional. All have the latest updates. I have also ran the "HiJack This " program.
I have 512 MB RAM and plenty of room left on the hard drive. I have made sure that the System Restore settings are correct.
Is there a way to correct this without a complete format?
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > System Restore tab and turn off System Restore - this will remove all the System Restore info from the drive - as it's not working at present this is not a problem.

Reboot and re-enable system restore. Make a manual restore point and see if that works.

Post back if this solution is a non starter.

    Whooa Down here Wayne ..........

First question - do you have a problem and is that why you are trying to restore to a previous state? If yes - don't turn off system restore at this point in time or you could well be looking at a repair installation.

Check your restore settings and if you are using a full 12% of your drive for System Restore - move the slider back to say 6-8% and close out, reboot and retry System Restore.

Lets try that for starters - repost as to what happens.

    System Restore in XP

First question - do you have a problem and is that why you are trying to restore to a previous state?Yes, there was a problem. I had bought a new printer and after installing the software it did not work. Apparently a bad install. A lot of things had changed on the system after this install. The way Windows booted up and shut down, for example. I couldn't get this repaired, so I tried a "system restore." It has been all down hill since then.
Check your restore settings and if you are using a full 12% of your drive for System Restore - move the slider back to say 6-8% and close out, reboot and retry System Restore.
I tried this suggestion and it did not change anything.
    Check restore Service are activated
Restore Service is activated and the settings are correct.
Seem to be the restore data corrupted, check for the _restore folder hidden on roof directory
I got lost on this one. How do I check this?
I have tried "sfc /scannow ". No results.
I have tried to restore a good copy of the registry and the problem still exists.
I really appreciate all of the help and await the next posting.
***As added info, I did delete all of the new printer information after this problem occurred.
    Thanks

If "didn't change anything" means that SR still didn't work, try the following:

Shut SR off: My Computer > Properties > System Retore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

    Reboot.

Go back and re-enable SR - will create an initial restore point.

After re-establishing SR, a way to test the Restore function:

Take any executable file ( extention .exe) , and burn it out and/or move it to the My Documents folder and delete it from it's original location. SR does not monitor files in My Documents folder regardless of file type.

Then restore to the initial restore point created by the system; the deleted executable should be back in it's original location. Afterwards, you can delete the copy in My Documents.

This won't help you with your immediate problem, but will get SR working. You can checkup on it periodically - w/o deleting the previous RP's - to make sure it's working.

Rockster2U's suggestion does address a wide spread problem - SR does not handle a filled to the max Restore folder well.

    Regards - Charles

    System Restore in XP

Looks like the problem is solved. I turned off the SR, rebooted. I turned System Restore back on and tested the system. All is well again as far as I can tell. Lost all of the old restore points, but guess they were not needed anyway.
Thanks to all who replied to this post. You are the greatest!

Glad to hear you got that sorted - the old restore points were basically useless as SR could not use them, so nothing lost :)
