Not sure this is the right place to ask this question but since the heart is a new motherboard it may well be. We installed a new motherboard in a friends puter. Everyhing went fairly well, as well as can be expected for first time and cluge parts, Now the system is up running win2kSP4 all driver seem to be doing fine except the sound card. The drivers I downloaded from the packard bell update site and don't thing they are the problem. I tried to run everest to verify things and it locked up while reading pci data. Same for aida and the install on the drivers. I am not sure where to start on this at this point so looking for guidance. The motherboard I believe is the athelon x71. Recommendations?

Hi guess I was not clear I am kind of a novice at this as this is the first we built from parts toally. My friends gateway PS died taking the MB with it. We are building this from parts. The MB is a gigabyte GA-71XE with a PIII processor and the components from the old gateway. Things to date have gone fairly well to this point. The system is up and appears stable running W2k. The problem began when I started to run everest to look at all the components. It froze looking at PCI data, same result with aida. I downloaded the drivers for the sound card which is the only driver showing bad on hardware manager. It locked up when starting the install wizard. I am not sure what the next step is.

I have edited your thread title to make it more specific

I have never run W2k, but some general thoughts ....

Check that all the PCI cards are properly seated - might be a good idea to remove each in turn and clean their contacts with a soft pencil eraser and replace.

Was the Gateway running Win2k - I wonder about compatability with some components. Are the drivers you downloaded for Win2k?

Did you install W2k clean, i.e. with a format of the drive, in which case ....

Have you loaded the motherboard chipset drivers?

FYI - Aida32 and Everest are basically the same software - Everest is the latest incarnation after a change of owner.

    Is it this motherboard?: GA-7IXE

You may just need to download the chipset drivers from Gigabyte and install those.

If the PCI bus does not work after that, since it is a fresh install of Windows, I would format and install Windows again. Install the chipset drivers as soon as Windows is running (then the graphics drivers, then other important drivers).

I hate to display my ignorance, but when you say chipset drivers are you referring to BIOS. If not would you get these drivers at the same sites that have BIOS?

robwhite, if you go to that link in my previous post and look at the list of links on left-hand side, you will see "Drivers ". It will take you here:
    http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Driver/Driver_GA-7IXE.htm
These are the drivers that Windows uses to run the chipset on the motherboard.

You would not need a BIOS update. There is only one and it only relates to running a larger harddrive.

    Sorry I was not clear.

Thanks so much Mattman. I now understand the difference. I had previously downloaded the BIOS and did not really understand the difference. I got all the info now and the machine is up and ready to go. Thanks so very much for all the help.
