I have run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, and eTrust online. Ad-Aware & Spybot were both updated before being run. I have done a search about this virus, and have seen solutions for other posters, but I still felt like I should post this before I attemped to fix it, incase there are other problems I am not seeing. Here is my Hijackthis log, and Thanks in advance for your help.

This will take a few steps. Start with the following.

    • Prepare CWShredder:
      • Download the stand-alone CWShredder 2.0 from here. Save it to the desktop. Double click to install.
      • Do not run it yet. We will run it later.
    • Run Symantec's BackDoor Removal Tool:
      • Download the Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool from Symantec.
      • Follow Symantec's instructions for how to run it.
      • Be sure to save the log file. I will need to see it later.
      • Restart your computer.
    • Open CWShredder from the new shortcut on the desktop, close ALL other windows and click fix.
    • Restart your computer once more.
    • Post a new HijackThis log and the log Symantec's tool gave you.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and click OK. Click Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files and extensions for known file types.

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folder Preview AdService.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the files qmgtpub.exe, qcusink.exe and gah95on6.exe.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

I didn't select Autoclean as the default is unchecked. Should I have?

Also, after I rebooted it from safemode, I have a System Configuration Utility window with Selective Startup checked. Should this be changed to Normal Startup?

And after reboot I got a Rundll Error:

    Error loading C:\DOCUME~1\TOM\LOCALS~1\TEMP\se.dll
The specified module could not be found

    Is this normal?

And now for the new Hijackthis log:

Great! Scan again with HJT, close all other windows and fix the following.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Preview AdService] C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\PrevAdServ.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOCUME~1\TOM\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall

    Delete these two files.
    C:\WINDOWS\BDIBv4.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SexNow.exe

    Empty the recycle bin.

Open msconfig, startup tab and verify everything listed is checked, then click OK. Restart. If you get another System Configuration Utility message, check the box not to show or run and click OK. Scan again and post a new log.

    Ok, new HJT log.

When I checked the startup tab like you said, there were a lot of things that were not checked, so I enabled all, and it looks as if HJT picked up on a buch more stuff. I also had some errors upon reboot, but I think they also have to do with the items in the startup tab.

I probably won't be back to fixing this until next week, as this is my friends computer I am fixing and he needs it for the weekend.

But I would like to say thank you for helping me, and thank you to this whole forum, where people just enjoy helping people.

    Anyway:

    Question for Dave:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmsys] C:\recover.exe

The legit version of recover.exe usually runs from system32 and that mmsys is strange.

    Newt,

I remember researching that one for quite some time before deciding to leave it. Seems it was associated with something particular to that machine, but for the life of me can't remember what right now. We'll check it out just in case, and I'll let you know when/if I figure out what I thought it was.

    cheesesteak,

Please check out the following files with this online malware scanner and post the results.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\services\wmplayer.exe
    C:\recover.exe

    Funny you should mention C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\services\wmplayer.exe

This was the last error I was getting upon every reboot, so I did some internet searching since my last post. Seems like this was part of some type of Media Player Hijacker. From what I read, this file should not be trying to start from this location, and the suggested fix was to go into the registry, search for the string and remove it. I did this, and the error is gone, and Media Player is working fine now. I'll work on your other suggestion now.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

C:\recover.exe is no longer on the system. I'm guessing RegScrubXP took care of it. I did a search and the only two recover.exe files on the system are:
    C:\I386\recover.exe
    C:\windows\system32\recover.exe
