Overwriting means the data at a particular physical location on the drive has been replaced with other data. It's highly unlikely the overwritten data could be recovered except with very expensive forensic software operated by somebody who knows what they're doing.

It would be very easy if you had GoBack installed at the time of the save-over. I'm not rubbing it in but passing that along in case. There are lots of users out there that actually have GoBack running and don't know it. It came with many Gateway camputers as part of the package. I think Gateway may have been the only one that did that so if you aren't running a Gateway, you're probably out of luck.

Another possibility would be if you had made a backup file or partition image before the write over, you could recover it that way. I doubt that would be the case but it's worth mentioning, just for laughs.

Think about implementing either or both of those options for next time. I'm sorry that I can't offer a better solution this time. :(

There are labratories that can dissassemble your hard drive in a dust free environment and use special equipment to read the physical hard drive. You are not doing this in your kitchen :)

Your problem is that by saving it with the same name, the table of contents that the drive uses to look up the file was totally overwritten. The data may be intact on the drive, but you have no way of getting there without serious skills and special software to reconstruct the data fragments.

If this data was really that important, you need to send the drives to a recovery specialist, like http://www.ontrack.com/
