    I had the trouble with right click having a problem with the DEP 'feature' and was stepping through the Shell Extensions Viewer to disable the extensions and the one by one was taking too long so I disabled all of them.

    Oops :eek:
    Now it doesn't have any GUI when logging in. Even Safe Mode doesn't have it, and restoring to a previous successful boot doesn't work. I guess because it's still booting OK, just not so it's useable.

    I've got another PC on the LAN and can get to the C drive on the troubled one, but I don't know what to do with it when I get there. I can also get to Safe Mode with Command line OK, so I can at least move around.

    Can anybody tell me what file(s) I might need to restore to get the regular shell extensions enabled again?

    Tks
    Mike

    Shoot. OK, I can blame it on the gray hairs.

    I just had an idea, started up in command mode, navigated to the directory with the Shell Ex Viewer in it and was able to run it from command mode and re-enable all the shell extensions.

    :D

    I'll probably be back with a different thread re the problem with the DEP & Win Explorer.

    You could do what I did. Ezarmor wasn't compatible because it used 4.5 Version of ZA Pro. I edited the boot.ini. This is what mine looked like after the edit. I only have the one partition on my HD

    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=Alwaysoff

    Putting Alwayoff disables DEP. Unless you want to search for the problem.

    Thanks Maggie, I was about to try that but my next step was to try to identify what was causing the trouble - if at all possible. I noticed that the error window kept mentioning the same file all the time, something called PnEl.dll and it turns out it was from the Earthlink TotalAccess toolbar installation. I found that out by using a different program that shows current processes and the modules they have open.

    When I uninstalled the Earthlink toolbar, my errors disappeared! I was getting ready to jump all over the tech support guys at Earthlink with my newfound problem and decided I'd take it one step further and be ABSOLUTELY sure their software was causing the trouble.

    Welllll, when I reinstalled their toolbar, it didn't re-introduce the error. So, I guess I'll have to chalk this one up to a glitch in the installation process. But I'm still not too sure what was happening. I can't find tha dll file in the taskpanel this time around.

    Oh well... Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that one around for future use!

    All your Dep problems will usually be during the boot up. I could have unchecked my Firewall at startup. But remembering to turn it on was a peta. It worked fine starting it after the computer booted. It would bluescreen on boot.
    I never put ISP software on my XP machines. Most aren't XP compliant.
    If you know the software you can go into the system folder and add it. I took the easy way by disabling the DEP.
