When starting to image, XP requires that I run the sysprep tool. After I run sysprep, I lose all my desktop icons even before I get to run ghost, I also lose any of the desktop settings such as disabling the onboard ethernet card (we use token ring), shutting off the operating system startup option in System Properties, etc. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Thanks

Norton Ghost is not the software of choice for cloning XP.

Please see http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=22075#post22075 for links to alternatives.

The important thing is to select a software that does not require XP to be booted so that there is no sharing violations. This makes for less trauma to the system since any software that forces a copy process will risk corrupting the file or not copying it at all.

I see where the latest version of Norton Ghost claims to handle XP but I would rather trust something that is already known to work.

My money goes on Novastor Instant Recovery.

 Sorry guys, I did not understand how you are running Ghost, from a DOS prompt, I assume?

I have been using Ghost for a while, imaging from 98 to Win XP Pro. I have the Enterprize version 7.5 and never had a similar problem. I don't know Novastore but I am pretty happy with Ghost...

    Cheers!

    Hi apeferreira

I suspect it's a matter of which version of Norton Ghost you're running. I understand that the older versions wouldn't handle XP.

NovaStor Instant Recovery has the advantage of being version independent. It actually boots to an abbreviated Linux session and does it's copy routine using a binary copy method (bit by bit) of any source drive you have.

By virtue of that, it will not need to be replaced with the appearance of a new version of OS, which seems to be a frequent occurence.

Did I mention that it's half the price of Ghost?

It does require a minimum of 32 meg of ram but that's not a problem now days.

If you're happy with Ghost, that's fine, I have no axe to grind, but when it comes time for a change, you may want to consider NovaStor.

    Best regards.

    ;) Thanks Zephyr!

I'll keep that in mind. I use version 7.5 and am happy with it.A great advantage of Ghost is when installed under Windows you have the Ghost Explorer that allows you to open an image and add or delete files to it. Pretty handy...

    All the best,
