I have an HP Pavilion running Win XP Home with a Celeron (yuck) processor that I have been more or less happy with. I have had DSL for about 6 months now and all was well. That is until I brought an old computer from work home to my children. It too is an HP only it has a PIII processor and was running Win98se which had somehow corrupted and would no longer download updates nor would it run my productivity software at work without critical updates. So I brought it home and loaded Win XP pro on it and then proceeded to attempt to create a home network to share internet connection as well as file sharing.
So after loading win XP and downloading updates and installing a wireless network card I ran net setup wizard on both computers, I then checked the allow file and printer sharing button and behold on the XP pro machine all is well I have "my network places" and it is working fine. The other maching though does not have "My network places" even after running net-setup wizard no less than three times and several reboots which are ofcourse needed to initiate the network connections after the wizard is through. I have not received any warning messages stating that anything is awry or in anyway malfunctioning. but alas I still have "no network places" I have pinged the pro computer with this one with success and have not been able to ping this computer from the pro.
Thanks for your help in advance!

Are both computers successfully connecting to the router?

Start with ipconfig information for each computer. Start - Run - "cmd ". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window - Open C:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Norton Internet Security or the XP Firewall turned on? If so, you need to configure them for file sharing.

Without knowing the ping results and what you attempted to ping is hard to say without knowing more details. Try testing the connectivity and name resolution between the computers and report back the exact message following after each one.

    1) Ping itself by computer name
    2) Ping itself by ip address
    3) Ping the other by computer name
    4) Ping the other by ip address
    5) Ping 127.0.0.1

    network places

If I understand your post correctly, your problem is only that you don't have a network places Icon?

If that is the problem, go to my computer, look at the toolbar on the top of the page and click the up arrow. That will take you to a window with all the available icons for your desktop, regardless of what you see on your physical desktop. one of the icons there will be netwrok places. Right click on it and select "show on desktop "

By the way both of these computers are connected through the router and DSL modem and can browse the internet without any problems at all.
    Ping results...
"home" computer has NO network places.
    "kids" computer has network places.
home can ping kids by ip not name, home can ping 124.0.0.1 but not itself.
kids can ping itself by ip or by name, cannot ping home by name or ip.

If any of the computers have the Windows Firewall enabled, make sure it is properly configured for file and printer sharing. With Windows Firewall enabled, go to the Exception tab, and click to check the File and Printer Sharing checkbox. If you've installed a third party firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, eTrust, ZoneAlarm, etc), make sure that it's configured to allow access on the local area network.

Unable to ping by computer name can be caused by a NetBIOS name failure. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all computers. Details here.

    Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

If you do not see My Network Places on the desktop, then click the Start button and see if you are using the XP Style or the Classic menu. If you're using the XP Style, then click Start, point to My Network Places, right-click on it and choose "Show on Desktop. "

    1. Right-click the Start button and choose Properties.
    2. Click the Customize button
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. In the white box, under Start menu items, scroll down and place a check next to My Network Places. That should put the My Network Places option in the Start menu. It should then appear under My Computer.
