Had to reload xp pro as a repair. I no longer have my netscape 7.1 mail profile. I have gone through C: docs. and settings, set each *.slt folder I could find as the mail server but could not find any of my previous email folders. I had a unique sub folder which win explorer found, but when I set this .slt as the mail server the mail file was not there and all other folders were empty. Could windows have put the profile somewhere else? Is there something else I should have done besides setting the mail server for netscape to recognize the profile?

You are ok if everything is on the hard drive. One thing is is missing, i.e. the link from the program to the profile. Is only mail missing?
In your Mail and Account Settings, Server Settings, find the Local Directory, whatever it is, and click on Choose, till you find the hard drive location. You should close NS after that, and on reopening you should see your mail, because you are pointing to the correct folder.

Westside, everything does seem to be on the HD. In the mail "server settings" I don't have a "choose" option. I found the server through win explorer, copied and pasted the location into the window, closed netscape and reopenned. Everything was still blank. This goes for my address books as well.

    Welcome to the Forum, living4God!

Is this path similar to the one you pasted into the Local directory field:

    < path >\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\pop.ispname.net

Once you change that path, you must close Netscape and restart, in order for the changes to be recorded in the prefs.js file.

If you have a recent backup of your Profiles folder, you can replace the prefs.js file with your backup, and see if that works. If no backup, then you may want to do some reading on this page: Preventive Browser Maintenance

Ramona, Yes the path is similar. Lets say the prefs.js file has become corrupted and no backup is available is there a procedure for trying to recover any files, i.e. address books.

You should be able to recover everything if it is on your HDD.

When you found the Mail Account folder, the folder was empty, containing no Mail, i.e., Inbox shows 0 KB? I think that you may be looking at the new Profile that was created after your XP problem. A few questions:

How many *.slt folders do you have?
If you have more than one, then when you view the Mail Account folders, are they named like this:
    pop.yourISP.net
    pop.yourISP-1.net

If so, the account without the -1 should be the one which contains mail.

Ramona, I have three: myisp, myisp-1, and -2. The myisp-1 had a few emails from '01 . The -2 showed nothing when I pluged it into netscape even though the inbox file was showing 99,000kb's. With myisp-1, i still had no address books. All total there were 3 *.SLT and 7 *.slt folders.

O.K., thanks, as that does help. So a few more questions:
How many Profiles do you have, do you use only one? The number of *.slt folders you report reflects many Profiles, and that's why I ask. Which of the *.slt folders reflect the Profile Name that you want to use?

You didn't say what the myisp.net folder contained. Does it contain the Mail you assumed lost? Or is the Mail in the -2 Mail Account the Mail you presumed lost? You can open the Inbox files (with no msf extension) in WordPad, and look at your Mail. However.... the size of that Inbox makes me shiver!

When you say that you plugged it into Netscape, did you change the Local directory setting to point to -2, or did you copy that Mail folder into the myisp folder on the HDD?

    Thanks!

    Ramolna

P.S., one more... When you look in Profile Manager, is the Profile you wish to use listed there?

    Re: your Address Book
That file is abook.mab, and located in the *.slt folder. Once we establish which Profile and Mail you wish to use, then you can find the Address Book containing all the addresses you lost, and move it to the appropriate *.slt folder.

I use only one profile. I think some of these are old profiles are from previous upgrades. At the time I didn't know about restoring profiles. One thing I have found is that each time I try to set the profile through profile manager, it creates a new .slt file. I've worked on deleting these as I figure out which ones they are. Now when I go to mail and account settings I only have "outgoing server" and "free web mail" as the settings catagories. Maybe I'm not setting up this account correctly. If you have a link that will take me through this i'd appreciate it.

This page: Mail Setup shows each step in the setup. As you look at each window, you can get back to us with any further questions.

If you have eliminated all the Profile Name subfolders from your Profiles folder, except the default Profile, then that's great. Have you tried changing your Server Setting | Local directory path, to the default Profile HD location?

I have gotten mail, setting, and address books back in the admistrator mode but not for my personal profile. Also we don't have our bookmarks in navigator. Thanks for your help to date. I'll keep working at the other problems through this site and the netscape site.
