    Hi All,

At one time, I used to be able to open OE 6 (while offline)....And then I would get a message asking me if I wanted to work offline or not.

But now a days when I try to open OE 6 offline, all I get is an error message saying that OE could not connect with the server.

Is there a setting available that would fix this?

    Thanks,

The only thing that comes to mind is if you have connect automatically checked in your DUN connection dialogue box for dialup - the box that pops up enabling you to select the connection, password and to connect, but OE should still open albeit with the message re. server.

Not sure if I follow you about the DUN box.....Juno sets up my POP account automatically, but at one time, I did not get the error message when opening OE offline...But now I do.

Edit: Here's a listing of the error message...

    See the screenshot below.

The first stage in repairing OE is to run System File Checker which I suggest you do ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

If I understand you correctly I think what you need to do is to open OE and click tools>options and on the general tab uncheck the line that says "Send and receive messages at startup ". At least this is what it sounds like is happening. If you have OE set to not dial a connection when you open it but have that line checked, OE will try to get new messages from the server. Since you aren't connected to the internet at the time it fails and throws this error message at you.

Is it safe to run the scf /scannow command after updating to SP2?

I was told that the .dll files & such were outdated on the older XP disks, and that it would create havoc with the OS if I used it.

    Does that make any sense?

That is true......But I used to could open OE offline and instead of getting the error message, I would get a box asking me if I wanted to work offline.

Maybe OE's updates have changed things since then.

    Hi Pete,

Am I correct in saying that I can run sfc as long as I redirect the source path in the registry to the latest .dll files?

It sounds like the article is telling me not to use the XP cd for my replacement files since I have installed SP2 & later updates.

Since Windows2000 SP3, the SFC (system file checker) is smart enough to recognize file versions so if you run SFC after doing various patches and the SP2 update, it will 'know' the proper version and the location of the replacement so will pull from CD or the patch or SP2 as needed to match the file version it is replacing.

I ran the sfc /scannow command with the XP cd in the drive, but I decided to run it again and I noticed that the PC was asking for the same files (Or so it seemed) again & again, no matter how many times I ran the (sfc /) command.

Is this normal?.......I don't remember having this problem in W98se.

It's not unusual for SFC to constantly ask for the location of the XP CD as noted in this article

Did running SFC have any effect on your original problem? Have you tried Zander's suggestion?

I've been messing with this here a bit and was able to get OE to give me the offline-online prompt you're talking about. In OE click tools>options and on the general tab you need to have the line that says send and receive messages at startup checked. Then below that where it says "If my computer is not connected at this time ", selecting anything other than "do not connect" will get me the prompt when I open OE while offline. Also, if you close OE with out going offline, the next time you open it you won't get the prompt to go online. You have to have OE set to work offline when you close it in order to be prompted to go online the next time you open it. I vaguely seem to remember a setting somewhere that would set OE to always start offline but if it's there, I can't find it. I'm using OE 6 and I suppose it's possible that setting was available in older versions of OE. I can't say for sure one way or the other.

If everything is set as I stated you should get the prompt to go online but you may still get the error message you're receiving now. If this is the case you probably have something set wrong for your dialup connection. Open OE and click tools>options>connections. Click on the dialup connection you want to use to connect and click the change button. Tick the line that says "dial whenever a network connection is not present ". Then in OE, click tools>accounts>mail. Double click on your mail account and on the connection tab uncheck the line that says "always connect to this account using ", then click apply.

Does the offline-online prompt you used to get look like the picture I've attached or is it different from mine?

    Hi Zander,

I was able to bring up the box you are referring to by going to the Tools/ Options/ General tab and by clicking the dropdown box and selecting the "Connect only when not working offline" option.....This seems to make things work like they used to one time.

I believe that solved the error problem.......Thanks. ;)

Note: My ISP (Juno) has configured the dialing properties to dial 2222....That's a strange way to dialup a connection!.....Must be tied into their downloaded software I have installed, as I use it to connect to the internet with.

Good. I'm glad that fixed it for you. I wouldn't have known where to go next. :)
