Have an old 400 comp with WIN98 (first). Have a newer 800 mhz, 512 RAM, WIN XP pro, and wondering how the easiest way to move, copy many old emails from old to new comp might be. Help to physically move old hard drive in to new comp temporarily? Thanks for help.

Which version of OE were you using with Win 98?

    Outlook Express 6
Also, I read the one link below from 2002 and it says:

"Open a DOS box in Windows and from the c: prompt type:
    dir /s *.dbx [enter]
Now take note of the path to those files. There should be at least 8 of them, more if you have created any sub-directories for personal use.
    Then type the following command:
xcopy (enter path found earlier)*.* c:\mymail\
That does it for the messages. For the address book:
    dir /s *.wab [enter]
and use the same approach as above.
You'll not likely need either of these but best to be sure. "

My question is, if you do these instructions where does this copy the emails to? I must be missing the obvious. Thanks.

This method usually works a treat ....

On the Win 98 box search for *.dbx files
Burn to CD or put the old drive in as a slave in the XP box and copy them to your new PC.

Copy to a folder named, say, Emails or Outlook Express or ....

In OE on the XP box go Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder and point OE to the new location.

This new Store Folder will be the one OE uses and will contain your old emails plus all future sent and received emails, but any current emails in the default folder will be inaccessible unless you point OE to it as above.

I can't think of a way to import OE mail from one store folder to another on the same computer right now.

BTW export your Favourites, Cookies from IE and your Address Book (Adresses > File > Export >WAB) from OE and Import on the new m/c.

xcopy (enter path found earlier)*.* c:\mymail\

That would send the .dbx files to c:\mymail and that probably (almost certainly) is not where you would want them. \mymail\ is something a user set up as a custom location and even more to the point, XP is a true multi-user OS and unlike 98, puts each user's personal files in a location specific to that user.

On the XP system after you have installed OE and opened it at least once so you have the default .dbx files created, search for them. You want to put your old ones in the same location. Also make sure you put at least one address in your new OE load so you will have your personalized .wab file to insure the old one goes in the proper location.

Old drive in new PC will certainly speed up file transfers and I'd recommend it.

Xcopy will do a much more reliable job of copying files than almost any other way I could think of so that is a good idea.
