    Hello:

Would someone know about these 2 problems? Thanks a lot!

    1) After I scanned (weekly or so) a few things with Norton and IE, I lost the Norton icon from my desktop. How can I reinstate it?

    2) Norton AV put 22 corrupted files in quarantine because it couldn’t repair them. Could someone tell me which ones are system files so I’ll know which NOT to delete? They are below:

    .bat
    .scr
    .scr
    .scr
    .scr
    .scr
    .scr
    border.scr
    end.exe
    endspan.scr
    endspan.scr
    endspan.scr
    ISPRESET.exe
    ISPRESET.exe
    mode..scr
    mode..scr
    mode..scr
    mode..scr
    scriptinject[2].bat
    size.bat
    todos.bat
    todos.bat

    Thanks very much! Adela

    Hi Adela
    To your first question.......
Go to start.....programs.......Norton's Antivirus....and right click on it. You should get the option to send to desktop as short cut.
The second part....I've not run into. Anything Norton's ever quarantined on me...I've deleted.
Do you know what virus you're dealing with? Perhaps there's a fix tool available for it?

    Hello Daizy:

    (1) Thanks so much for your suggestion - it worked like magic! (Here I wanted to have the little smilie 3rd on the 2nd raw but didn't work although I clicked on the circle by it and at the bottom it says that's "enabled "(?)...

    (2) As to the quarantined files, no, I don't know what they are and that's why I'm afraid I may delete necessary system files.

    Thanks again! Adela

    Hello Bret:

I appreciate so much the very useful Symantec site you gave me. I immediately went to explore it and didn't see where they might help to find out which of the files I have in quarantine are system files and which aren't. What they do do, (and I kept this site for any future need) is help you delete the corrupted files.

    Thank you again. Adela

    Adela,

Sorry for the evasive answer :)

None are system files and I *think* that you can safely delete them. That said, I am somewhat puzzled as to why a number of extensions are listed without any file name being shown - for example, in the case of the listing for .scr (which is (usually) a screensaver file) I would have expected to see the file specified (yourscreensaver.scr) rather than just the extension (.scr). For this reason, I'm a little hesitant to advise that you *do* actually delete the files.

I think it would probably be best to proceed as follows.

Download a copy of F-Prot for DOS (it's free) and unzip the contents to a folder called C:\FSI. Download a copy of the most recent definitions (from the same link) and unzip these to the same folder (simply overwrite the previous definition files).

Now boot to DOS and at the C:\ prompt, type "CD FSI" (without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key. Type "F-PROT" (again, without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key. You'll now get a screen which shows the available functions. You can use the arrow keys to move around the screen, and press the "Enter" key when you want to select an action. Under the "Scan" options select "Disinfect" (rather than "Delete ") and then start the scan.

    Hopefully, this'll fix the problem.

    Good luck :)

EDIT: F-Prot will not run under XP. You're not using XP, are you?

    Quarantined: system files?

    Hi Bret:

Oh don't apologize. I appreciated every help you give! I know, it's a puzzle all these strange names. I'll try your last suggestion. Thanks very much again! Adela

P.S. How do you get the smilies to come out yellow??? Could it be that I must write this :) to get it? Until now I just clicked on the smilie I like, but I never know WHERE it will appear and it comes out blue...LOL!

Adela - The default setup for NAV is to create a Quarantine subfolder under the main NAV folder and to stuff anything it can't deal with into that folder.

But there shouldn't be anything else in that folder unless you put it there.

I'm trying to think back and I seem to remember that files placed in quarantine are renamed though - and I think all given the same new extension. Not positive though since I have changed the parameters to have the AV part just delete any files it can't clean. It struck me as stupid that I ever spent time deleting all files from that folder every week or so.
