I have the program G-Lock Temp Cleaner. A scan produces a list of temp files that I always delete. And then a list of zip files, which can only be deleted one at a time. The "select all" option doesn't work with those. So now that list is very long, because I don't know what to delete and what not to delete.

Exactly what are those files? When I download programs they go into My Downloads folder. Then when I install them they go into Program Files folder. So the programs that are zipped and have to be unzipped go into My Downloads folder. Once I've installed the programs on my computer, should I delete those files in My Downloads folder? I've just left them in there, and it's getting pretty full. Probably taking up a lot of disk space too?

Those seem to be the files showing up on that zip file list on G-Lock . If I delete those will it cause any problems? Are there some I shouldn't delete? How do I know the difference? Thanks. Val

No need to keep all the zip files, but if ever need to reinstall the program, or use on a different computer, then suggest putting them on a cdrom, esp if they are programs that you purchased. Also, I doubt these zip files take up much space on the disk. My download folder is 1.6 GB & includes zip files. I keep all of them too.

Likewise, I burn my private stock of program downloads to a CD periodically and then wipe them from the hard drive. If you don't have the ability to place them on a separate media like that, then a different approach may be in order. Then you would want to analyze which ones you would definitely reinstall, if needed, and which ones are easily available from the Internet when needed. Also consider that they will get outdated in time and you'll be hanging on to some older version that is useless.

Don't overlook the possibility of storing some items on an Internet based mailbox by mailing them to yourself. Typically you can get 250 Megs of free space on those. That'll hold several small utilities. I use that for off-site storage of some critical files in addition to storing them on other media.

How would I email them to myself? I have two 1 gig mailbox accounts, with Spymac and Walla, so I have plenty of room to do that. That idea never occurred to me. How would I do that? BTW, almost ALL of the programs I have on my computer are freeware downloads off the net. Thanks. Val

P.S. Where do you surf? Bet you would've liked to surf that psunami wave, eh?

    catpurrson, It's quite simple actually.

In my case, I have accounts with Netscape Mail, IMail, and Yahoo. All are net based mailboxes which means I have none of the files locally, they are all held on their server storage. They allow free storage of 250 megs and you can pay a small annual fee if you want even more.

Then when I want to store some file or folder on one of the free services, I just open OE and use my ISP pop 3 account to send the data along as an attachment, addressed to the internet based mailbox of my choice. There are certain size limitations (2 meg on most free services) for the attachments but mine are generally much smaller than that. I could actually use one net based service to send the local attachment to another net box but I never do it that way since OE is easier.

Look around and you'll find lots of free net based boxes still out there. Some are better than others so you have to look deep.

    Good luck.

ps. The nickname is Dude and I surf the web. :) Spent 35 years in CA, done all my swimming in the pool and none in the ocean. :D

Okay, maybe I'm a little confused. Is a net based mailbox any email account that isn't OE? Like Yahoo, Hotmail, free NetZero, etc? That's what I'm thinking you mean.

(Like duh, it did't occur to me that the name surferdude is in reference to surfing the web.)

    Thanks. Val

Yes, you have the right idea. As the term implies, the mail is stored or based on the Internet and not held locally.

Just think, you can check it from anybody's computer even from the ones at the library, even when you're on the road, if they will permit it. Some do, some don't.

I read it as you download everything to the C: drive.

I myself NEVER download ANYTHING to the C: drive. I have a special tempinst folder on another partiton ( H: ) where they get downloaded to first. And then get moved to yet another folder. One folder for .zip files and another for other downloads.

Then as someone else mentioned they get burned to a CD every so often.

HMMMMM !!. I just wrote a reminder to myself LOL
