I had to reboot my Gateway with Windows Me. Now the printer in the USB Port will not work. Worked before and works if in Parallel where the other printer normally is.

If you unplug the printer while the pc is off and then plug it in after the pc is booted up, does Windows see find the printer?

    Did not work

When pluged into USB i get a "not communicating" error. I was told that the USB port might need to be turned on through a change in the BIOS but I can not get into them? The manual says to hit F1 when propted during restart. I get no prompt and have tried hitting F1 during different times during restart with no success.

Hit F1 rapidly (don't hold it down) immediately after you hear the BIOS beep.

Please bear with me, I am computer stupid. I have no idea what I am looking for or when to look for this BIOS prompt or beep. When i restart I get a Gateway screen(it is a Gateway computer) followed by a MicrosoftME screen, couple seconds of black and then my Desktop. When should this prompt be?

Unfortunately I am not familiar with Gateway computers - I build my own, but let's take this one step at a time.

One of the problems on boot up is that the screen takes time to 'warm up' and show an image - very often the screen that you want to see passes before the screen shows an image. This is probably the case here.

You should see a prompt along the lines of 'To enter Setup press F1'.

When you start the computer you hear a beep? This is the BIOS beep as the POST (Power On Self Test) screen appears - or not if the monitor has not warmed up.

As soon as you press the power button start pressing F1 rapidly and you should bring up Setup - the BIOS screen.
