    HI,
Well it's tuesday I thought resting my brain over the weekend would help but it isn't helping at all!!

I did what you said in the last post In the HostFileREader it had the I386 and I double clicked on that and it gave me exactly what it said but I clicked the Reset Default anyway and then I did the WinSockFixWinAll.exe and it when I clicked on the run registry box it popped up that It would change registry I clicked ok and then for every file it said ERROR click ok to coninue to the next file and so on through the whole set up. So I am not sure if it worked or not.

I rebooted and I still get the same thing. In Spybot S&D Where I need to update the Spyblaster It gets as far as getting files from the server and then just sits there for a long, long time and never updates.

I was however able to select the lock host in the IE tweaks box. but still cannot get anywhere.

Oh yeah... I want to remind you that I am a client on a network of 4 computers. We have Free ZoneAlarm but I have it shutdown to try to get by to update but that doesn't seem to work either.

    What now?

    Susan

PS I hope you had a nice weekend!!

Well,... I have spoken to microsoft virus tech support and they feel I have do not have any viruses and that My IE is the problem.

They suggested that I call e machines(who made my computer) and ask for a new disc to reinstall IE.

They don't know how to set netscape as my browser so I need to call netscape to have them tell me how to set Netscape as my default browser.

Anyone know how to set Netscape as my default browser? without being on hold for another 4 hours!!

Really I am not exagerating!! I was on hold off and on for 4 hours!!!

Anyone know if I can get IE reinstalled without a disc?

I am at wits end here!!

    Hi Susan,

Sorry for the delay. I've been a bit hesitant to suggest this, because it will mean re-installing your Windows Updates, but I think you should now run the system file checker. You will need an XP cd. Click start>run and type cmd and hit enter. In the command prompt window, type sfc /scannow and hit enter, insert the cd when/if prompted, then sit back and wait. When finished, remove the cd, close all windows and reboot. Try going directly to Windows Update.

I believe you should be able to set Netscape as your default browser through the Set Program Access and Defaults option on the start menu. (If you don't see the option, right click the start button and choose properties. Then click the customize button for the selected start menu option, then advanced tab. Check the corresponding box to add the option to the start menu.) Once into the Program Access and Default option, check Custom then use the arrow to the right to expand that field. Check Use Current Web Browser and enable access to IE. Click OK. If that doesn't prompt you to set Netscape as your default bowser when opened the next time, open Internet options in the control panel, programs tab, and check the box for IE to check if it is default and click OK. When starting IE you should be prompted for setting it as default. Click don't ask again and no. Netscape should now prompt you upon opening.
Is this when checking for/downloading updates to Spybot or while checking for updates to SpywareBlaster, the program linked to in Spybot?

If running sfc fails to fix IE, look around in the folder/subfolders containing WinsockFixAll for a log that might show what was done/attempted/failed when you ran it and post it's contents when found. If you don't find one, run the program again. If I remember correctly, it creates and opens a log when done. Save it and post.

If by chance you don't have/can't get an XP cd, let us know. There are work-arounds and other repair methods.

    Hi thanks for the help!!

When it looks for updates for the Spyblaster when running Spybot S&D.

I do not have a windows XP CD, So if you could help me through that it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think we got anything when we bought this computer off the display at Circuit City. I'll never do that again!

So am I correct in thinking that I don't have a virus problem anymore and just the effects of one??

I know a virus/spyware/adware caused the problem but now I am just suffering the effects??

    Thanks,

    Susan

Very hard to say whether or not you are still suffering from active infected files or after-effects, since I still have not seen a new HJT log or the results of an online virus scan. Try running Trend Micro (works with Netscape too).

No need to update SpywareBlaster with Spybot open. You can start it from the All Programs menu. If you're having problems downloading Spybot updates, click the arrow to the right of See_Cure (Europe) and select a US site, then download.

I've attached a zip file. Download and extract the reg file, then double click to merge. Then run sfc /scannow. Reboot when done and see if IE works. Follow up with the WinsockFix if necessary.
