    Hello All,

I am hopeful that someone can point me in the right direction in solving this problem. First: I am running a two computer network with win2k adv server and win2k professional. I have a linksys BEFSR41 router, Linksys Ethernet Cards in both machines. When I attempt to go onto the internet using the workstation, I get the following error message. Cannot find server or DNS error.

Now I can ping both numbers and alphabets from the server and get a response i.e. 192.168.1.1 or yahoo.com. I can only ping numbers from the workstation, noy letters such as yahoo.com, I timeout when i attempt to ping letter i.e yahoo.com.

I can do anything on the internet from the server, but can't access the internet from the workstation.

The ip address of the server is 192.168.1.10 and the address of the WS is 192.168.1 11.

I just recently reinstalled the WS software (win2k professional).

Can someone tell me where I might start looking to solve this problem. If additional information is necessary please ask, i will provide whatever info you need. thanks in advance for all responses.

You need to add DNS server information to the Win2K machine. Right click on the My Network Places icon and select Properties. Right click on the icon that represents your NIC and select Properties. Highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click the Properties button. Enter the DNS information from your ISP. You can use the same information that the server is using.

Are you running DHCP or DNS on your Windows 2000 Advanced Server? That might be mucking things up if your workstation is trying to use the Windows 2000 DNS for name resolution.

Yes, I am running dns because I am running Active Directory. My dhcp is being handled by my Linksys router.

Ok, that's what I thought. It sounds like your Windows 2000 Pro machine is attempting to do DNS name resolution via the DNS service running on your Windows 2000 Server. Check out the default gateway setting on your Pro box (ipconfig /all).

    Hello,

The Default gateway on the pro box is the same as the server. 192.168.1.1

Do you have your ISP's DNS servers in the linksys?
Also what mac address does your ISP have on record?
They either need the MAC of the Linksys or you need to do the "Mac Address Clone" in the linksys to the MAC your ISP has on file for you.

    Hi,

The MAC address is already in the Linksys router.
