I have a friends Windows 2000Pro machine here and have been whittleing away at problems and have updated Service Packs and A/V and cleaned a number of virii and trojans and spy/malware but have a major problem remaining:
I cannot establish a DUN connection. I have gone in thru Internet Options>Connections/Connections Wizard and thru the Add a connection route. I enter all info required and get to the name the connection then click 'Next' and get the message (paraphrased) "Invalid name. It has to contain at least one character and cannot begin with a period" and it will not go farther. I have dialed my ISP with Hyperlink just fine so the modem is ok but I cannot establish a new connection. Any help or hints would be appreciated greatly by me and the friend. There is one other small problem but won't go into that now.
Edit: There are no disks available. The computer was built and delivered w/o, unfortunately.

You've looked for a partition or folder containing .cab files or an image file, sometimes called 'recovery'? OK, and the keyboard works normally otherwise? Sounds like your friend is in the market for a windows CD.

Sparrow - I know nothing of Windows 2000 other than how to get around to some basic functions. Yes, the keyboard works normally. I have searched for "console" and "image" with Find but that's all .
I have pressed F8 upon start and tried "Last known good configuration" and still the same. We heard these words from the owners ISP tech to "reinstall ". Is that it? Is there a common or usual reason or cause of this? I was going down the path that since it was way out of date as to updates and covered up with spyware/malware/virii that one or some of them were the cause.

To be complete search with 'find' for .cab files. If you find a large folder containing loads of them, that's usually a substitute for a windows CD. Does the computer have a brand name? If not, you probably need a new windows CD.

It is not a brand name machine but one built by a system builder. I searched in Find for .cab and found two rather large files, both of about 50MB, one being in C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386 and the other in C:\i386.

C:\i386 - that's all the system files off the install CD.

If not, post back and we'll look for other ways to skin this cat.

Newt, or....? - I have found and tried the W2K Setup Wizard (C:\i386) any number of times in both the Upgrade and the Clean Install modes with no luck. I found the key code of the machine (in the registry and with keycode finder as there is no sticker on the case) and start the wizard and type in the keycode and always get back the same dialog box - "Invalid Product key ". I have tried this several ways and always get the same "Invalid ". I guess I've tried all I know to do. Also still cannot complete the new connection procedure. Is there anything further that can be done? I'm very limited in DOS and kinda slow in other areas but all suggestions or answers are appreciated.

Two things to try at this point.

Click on start, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and click OK. Hopefully the registry is set to look to the I386 folder for replacement files rather than to look for them on a CD. If not, post back and there is a registry setting you can tweak to point to the I386 folder.

After that, start=>run=>cmd and key in the following the press ENTER. It will reset IP stuff back to the defaults and hopefully clear whatever glitch you have run into.
    Code:
    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Newt - Attempt to run SFC and it starts checking files and pops a dialog box with "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. Insert W2K Pro Cd..........." which I don't have.

Should I attempt the 2nd step?

Great! - Changed registry as instructed, ran SFC which completed, I assume, as the progress bar went the route.....
But - From Run>cmd> typed netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and recieved: "the following command was not found: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" (tried several times)

I think you were bitten by a bad assumption I made. That netsh string works in XP to reset the IP stack but after some searching, I'm not finding that netsh in 2000 has the reset parameter available. My bad.

XP doesn't allow removal of networking so it was essential to have a reset mechinism and I guess they added this feature but didn't have it in 2K. Shame since it is the easiest way.

Ah well. Have to do things the old fashioned way. In the networking section, remove all the pieces you find (DUN "connections ") by right-clicking and clicking delete. That may reset things. Removing and reloading TCP/IP is more involved so lets avoid that if possible.

Ok - There is no DUN in the Networking section, only LAN connection and Make New Connection. I did a FIND for dialup networking and found:
    11 AXDialup.RL_Files in Folder C:i386\WINNTUPG\OEM\NOVELL\xxxx language
    1 AXDialup OC file...........\REDIR

All dated the same. That's all I can find. For kicks I went thru the Wizard while there (again) with same results in that it won't complete the 3rd step with error msg..

[Edit] This may or may not have a to do with the problem: The builder put GoToMyPC on this machine to help out with problems when needed. It is still installed but not working properly at the moment best I can tell.
[Edit #2] I was looking thru the MSKB for the problem and it is verbatim here:MSKB article

Newt - I finally got Setup.exe (from C:\i386) to accept a keycode I managed to find. That started this mornings adventures as I attempted a Repair reinstall - Didn't work. Then finally wiped everything and reinstalled a complete reinstall - Did work and have established an internet connection and updated A/V, installed firewall and pecking away at the rest of needed apps now.
Of course all apps and settings were lost but at the point things were it's a relatively small loss. She didn't have a lot of documents or saved items so it's startover time. I thank you for your time and knowlege and it is greatly appreciated. To have the board for moral support is sometimes enuf. It always offers hope. :D

LOL - we try hard for 'help' but do occasionally have to settle for 'hope'.

At least that way you know you aren't dealing with a simple problem. :)

Glad to hear you got things running again. Scrub & reload was probably your best option since no telling what other gremlins would have jumped up down the road.

Is your friend gonna be more careful or will you be looking to deal with this same box after it gets eaten alive once again?

Heh Heh! :D I have intentions to and she actually asked "Would you please have all those "anti" things operate automatically." I will do my best to auto all apps I put on her computer. We shall see what we shall see I guess. :) Thanks again Newt.
Even tho I had the MS Security update CD there were still a potful of downloads to get which took some time on dialup. :(
