Due to problems with the system I reinstalled windows xp home. Now, the ethernet connection is not working properly, the NIC is working perfectly, however, the networking properties may be not setup correctly. I went to the internet options and set the LAN as my default, the NIC is connected. When I go to network connections the LAN connection is enabled. I also tryed the IPconfig/renew (when I run IPconfig it does not give me the IP address), and starting the DHCP Clien. By the way, it does not have SP2. I have tryied a lot and cannot this thing to connect.
    I "ll appreciate your comments.

no it does not reply any ip address. When I ask for it, the only thing that replies is Windos IP configuration

If that's the only thing that you get is Windows IP configuration when you type ipconfig at the command prompt, then the network adapter isn't properly installed or you need to find the latest compatible drivers for the network card.

Look for the model or product number (eg; 3C900B-TPO). There are many different cards available. The product number may be on the network card itself. Take a look there or look at the manual that came with it and see about downloading the drivers or if it came some set of drivers.

First, go into the Device Manager, click to expand the Network adapters and select the network adapter installed. Right-click and choose Uninstall and then click "Scan for hardware changes" and let it detect it and see if that works by reinstalling the adapter.

It is possible that this is a tcp/ip issue, not a driver problem.

If you open the device manger and can see the nic, with nothing significant next to it to indicate it's ******* up, my guess your problem is in the protocol.

When you reisntalled XP did you install the system over itself, or did you format the drive and re-install the OS (preferred)

If you did not format the drive try downloading this winsock restore tool.

I did reformat, thanks for your advice.
I tried to reinstall the drivers and the ethernet controller is missing, I went to the dell site and retrieve it and cannot get it to work. I installed the driver but nothing is going on!

    Problem Resolved!

Thanks to all of you that helped out. The problem was a driver that was not supposed to be installed. Because the NIC did not complain about the wrong driver, I couln't see the problem, so I went through the whole procedure again and remove all drivers and reinstalled them again. It's working.
    Thanks for your help.
