Yeah, I copied it there from C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles becasue it was the largest of the i386's at 442Mb. I moved it there on Saturday. It has 2,192 files in it. 1,046 are .dll's.

Ouch, I suppose that could do some harm if the folder already existed and you chose to replace it entirely when/if asked. If it didn't exist, you would still end up with the wrong files.

That folder isn't intended to be the same size as any of the other ones. It is supposed to contain the original install files and not the updated service pack files.

That probably explains why you keep getting asked for the CD. Your option now would seem to be to get a full install XP CD and copy the i386 folder from it to replace the one on your drive that is apparently improper.

So where do I get the XP CD from then? I never got one when I got the PC from Time Computers which specializes in PC's etc? Would it be possible to use a friends XP CD with my PC?

AFAIK, If your friend has the same version of XP, it will work just fine. No product id code required for copying the i386 folder.

Not that I know of. I think that would be considered a copyright violation.

So getting someone to upload the folder, and then me download it would be breaking the law?

Technically, yes. (and actually yes too) Not to mention the hugh size and the time it would take.

How weird is that. I'm allowed go and borrow someone else's CD, but I'm not allowed to have them upload it and me download it. The uploading and downloading part isn't a problem. Anyway, all I need to do, is copy the folder 'i386' from the XP CD and then I move it to C:\?

I'm no lawyer but I would err on the side of keeping you safe. For you to do the deed in the presence of a friend who understands the implications and can readily be assured that you are a legitimate owner of a valid copy of XP is one thing. To download it from the internet is an entirely different matter and I wouldn't want to guess under what circumstances that may/may not be legal. I see that as a proof of ownership issue, but like I said, I'm no lawyer. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.

Yes, just get that folder copied to your c:\ root to replace the existing one. I don't need to know how you did it. I'll assume that you purchased a disk from someone.

Lol, and then once I have aquired it, I then run sfc and everything should be OK?

Oh, and how should my registry look?

    'C:\i386'
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
    C:\UNZIPPED\W2KTEST
    D:'

    What should be in SourcePath?

    LOL.

Yes, in our dreams you'll then be able to run sfc /scannow successfully without being nagged for the install CD.

Leave the Registry as you have it based on what I asked you to insert last. Having extra source paths is no problem, XP will use what's valid and ignore the rest.
